Laie, HI (1/26/09) -- Academy of Art University played better in the second half, but was unable to recover from a 28-67 deficit at halftime and eventually lost to Brigham Young University – Hawaii, 107-60. Freshman forward Hunter Hayden had a career-high with 16 points and a team-high nine rebounds (seven of the offensive variety) and freshman point guard Marqus Crawford added 14 points along with seven assists. The Seasiders converted 45 points off 27 AAU turnovers despite the fact that the teams shot relatively evenly.
Beginning the game on a 12-2 run, BYU-H, one of two undefeated teams in the Pacific West Conference, took a commanding lead to begin with, but the Urban Knights responded with a short 5-1 burst in which sophomore point guard Weleh Dennis knocked down a 3-pointer. The Seasiders' forward Lucas Alves, the PacWest Player of the Week, hit to free throws to then spark a 12-2 run by the home team who never looked back.
After shooting over 65% from the floor BYU-Hawaii had grown its lead to 39 when the horn blew for halftime and the Knights would not get much closer in the second period. Five AAU turnovers came in the first three minutes and soon the Seasiders' advantage had risen to 51. BYU-H would maintain that lead until the conclusion.
Hayden earned many of his points on tip-ins as he was around the basket all night as evidenced by his seven offensive rebounds. Crawford's 14 points and sophomore guard Phillip Samuel's 13 points were the only two double-digit scoring performances for Academy of Art University. Freshman forward Lorenzo Dobson pulled nine rebounds as well and sophomore center Sebastian Vos had the best game of his Urban Knight career with nine points and four rebounds.
Alves had a game-high 21 points for BYU-Hawaii while guard Virgil Buensuceso turned in a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. Guard/forward Nathan Sims had 16 points and two other Seasiders also finished with double figures in points as well.
The Urban Knights are now 3-18 following this loss while the Seasiders are 13-1 overall and have won 10 consecutive games to currently stand atop the PacWest Conference standings.
Academy of Art University now shifts its attention to the University of Hawaii at Hilo Vulcans (9-7) for its third and final game of this Hawaii road trip. Tip-off for this contest is set for 7:30 PM following the women's pairing with Hawaii Hilo.
