Laie, HI -- The Academy of Art University women's volleyball team fell to the BYU-Hawaii 3-0 (29-27, 25-15, 25-19) at the
George Q. Cannon Activities Center on Tuesday night. Junior outside hitter
Dan Yang finished with a team-high 12 kills and 11 digs in the match. The Urban Knights are now 16-8 overall and 4-4 in Pacific West Conference play while the Seasiders move to 12-10 and 8-4 in the PacWest.
Tied at 16-16 in the opening game, BYU-Hawaii went on a 9-3 run, but the Knights fought off five consecutive set points with a six-point surge of their own. Although Academy of Art battled through two more set points, the visitors eventually fell 29-27. Yang had seven kills in the game.
AAU struggled through the beginning of the second set after dropping behind 13-2. Although the Urban Knights fought back, the Seasiders would eventually prevail 25-15.
The two teams stayed close for the majority of the third set, but with the Knights trailing 17-16, BYU-Hawaii took the match on an 8-3 run. The Seasiders captured the game 25-19.
Yang had 12 kills for the Knights to go with 11 digs while sophomore outside hitter Nicolette Hagan added eight kills. Senior libero Heather Allen had 11 digs and freshman setter Melissa Cheng turned in 34 assists for AAU.
BYU-Hawaii was led by outside hitter Kylee Nawahine and her 15 kills. PacWest Player of the Week outside hitter Losaline Faka'osi had 11 kills along with 11 digs.
Tomorrow night, Academy of Art University will rematch versus BYU-Hawaii for the teams' second match in two days. The opening serve is set for 7:30 PM (10:30 PM PST) and the match can be seen on www.byu.tv.
