Softball Sweeps Double Header For First Wins

Box Score #1

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- The Academy of Art played a doubleheader against Bethany Tuesday afternoon. Coming off a 0-5 record, the Urban Knights came out attacking, thriving for their first win. Although held scoreless until the late innings of both games, they pulled together to take both games from Bethany, 2-0 and 5-3.

The Urban Knights started the first game with a strong pitching performance. Keeping the Bethany batters off balance, the Academy of Art was able to get something started with their own offense. Even though they were held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, the Urban Knights were able to string some hits together and manufacture a few runs.

Sophomore Alana Aweau went 1-for-3 on the game, with a double, a stolen base and one run. Freshman Melissa Coe scored the second run for the Urban Knights, and had two stolen bases. These two runs would prove to be enough for the Urban Knights as they won the game 2-0.

Freshman Sierrah Garcia was on the mound for the Academy of Art in the first game. She threw a complete game shutout, with four strikeouts and gave up only four hits.

Box Score #2

The Urban Knights got off to a slow start in the second game. Bethany University scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning, while the Academy of Art remained scoreless. It wasn't until the top of the fourth inning that the Urban Knights would cut the lead in half with a run of their own. However, defensive errors were costly as Bethany answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth. It was then that the Urban Knights were able to buckle down and take control of the game.

Junior pitcher Ericka Ames was in the circle for the Academy of Art. She gave up nine hits and only three runs to the Bethany offense.

Alana Aweau came up big offensively again for the Urban Knights. She went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Junior third baseman Ashley Roy went 2-for-3 in the game, while her teammate Carissa Nichole Perales went 2-for-4 with a run. Junior Shampayne Clay had a tremendous second game going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. The Urban Knights were able to muster up ten hits and five runs in the second game, and finished with a score of 5-3.

“The girls really came together for the wins,” exclaimed head coach Rachel Sherman. “It was a team effort all the way around. We are very proud of them and looking forward to reaching more milestones.”
With the win, the Academy of Art improves to 2-5 on the season while Bethany drops to 0-2 overall. The Urban Knights next travel to Southern California for a five-game, two-day tournament. The games are set to take place at Noble Park in Beaumont, Calif. Game times are at 9:00 a.m., 11:20 a.m., and 1:40 p.m. on Saturday, February 14.
