San Francisco -- The Urban Knights traveled across town to take part in the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on March 27. The Academy of Art University had five top-five finishes this weekend as they competed against top DII schools like San Francisco State University, Humboldt State University, and Chico State University, along with DI schools like Santa Clara University and St. Mary's College.
Freshman
Briana Stewart (Oakland, CA) took the top spot twice Saturday afternoon placing first in the 100 meter dash, with a time of 12.78, and in the long jump jumping 19-01.25 feet. This was Stewart's first appearance in a collegiate meet and given her performance this weekend, she will prove to be a huge asset for the Urban Knights.
For the men,
Joey Villasenor (Olivehurst, CA) took the top spot in the running events placing third in the 400 meter dash, beating our four runners from Humboldt State University with a time of 52.04 seconds. He also placed fourth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.70 seconds. Freshman
John Harris (Trenton, NJ) was just two seconds behind
Villasenor finishing in the eighth spot in the 200 meter dash.
Running in the 100 meter dash for the men was
Harris and
Dayne Coyne (San Diego, CA), they finished ninth and 11th respectively.
Geoffrey Cheruiyot (Nairobi, Kenya),
Simon Mutai (Nakuru, Kenya) and
Shawn Daut (Pleasanton, CA) all competed in the 800 meter run for the Urban Knights. A time of 1:59.38 was good enough for a 16th place finish for
Cheruiyot.
Mutai and
Daut finished one after another in the 25th and 26th spot.
On to the field events where
Durelle Williams (Nassau, Bahamas) took first place in both the long jump and triple jump events. In long jump, he jumped 21-01.25 feet for the win, and in the triple jump, he jumped 44-04.00 feet for a first place finish.
The AAU women had the same outcome in long jump,
Stewart and
Miranda Wiley (Barnsville, OH) finished in the first and second place spots.
Stewart jumped 19-01.25 feet, while
Wiley followed closely behind her with a jump of 17-01.25 which was good enough for second place.
The Urban Knight's next meet will take place back at San Francisco State University on April 4 as they compete in the Johnny Mathis Invitational.
