Urban Knights Come From Behind to Defeat Argonauts

Box Score

Belmont, CA—The Academy of Art University's softball team played a single game against Notre Dame De Namur University on Wednesday afternoon. The Women were originally scheduled for a double header, but due to an injury plagued Argonaut team they kept it to a single. The two teams were equally matched, but the Urban Knights battled back to take the game from NDNU with a final score of 2-1.

Notre Dame De Namur started the game off by holding the Academy of Art University scoreless. The Urban Knights were able to get runners in scoring position in the first two innings, but were unable to bring them in. The Argonauts struck first by scoring a run in the bottom of the second. But the Urban Knights quickly got out of the inning and soon buckled down.

The Urban Knights answered right back with a run of their own in the top of the third. With two outs, Alana Aweau singled. Shampayne Clay then followed with a deep line drive to left center field for a double, scoring Awaeu from first. That tied things up at one. Both team's pitchers were strong keeping things quiet for a few more innings. But the Academy of Art University Women were not satisfied with only one run and were determined to take the lead.

It wasn't until the top of the sixth inning, that the Urban Knights were able to get more offense going. Nicole Palmer led the inning off with a double, and advanced to third on a passed ball. With one out, Crista Sykes reached on a fielder's choice as Palmer was thrown out on a play at the plate. With two outs, Ashley Petty drew a walk and now the Academy of Art University had runners on first and second. Ericka Ames then singled to center field, scoring Sykes from second. The Urban Knights would only manage one run that inning, but that would prove to be enough of a lead. With solid pitching and tough defense, the Academy of Art University held the Argonauts scoreless in the last two innings and ended up winning with a final score of 2-1.

Ericka Ames was in the circle for the Academy of Art University. She pitched a very good game going seven innings pitched, giving up five hits and only one run. Ames had no walks, one hit batter and four strikeouts on the day.

For the Academy of Art University, Alana Aweau had a very good day at the plate. Aweau went 3-3, with two doubles, a walk and a run scored. Ashley Roy also did well going 2-4 with a double and Crista Sykes finished the day going 1-2 with a walk and a run scored.

Lead hitters for the NDNU Argonauts were C. Avila who went 2-3, B. Morales who went 1-3 with a run scored, and R. Araujo who went 1-3 with a run batted in.

With the win, the Academy of Art University's record improves to 11-27 on the season and Notre Dame De Namur University's record falls to 10-36 overall.
