Academy of Art University Accepted into NCAA

San Francisco, CA -- On July 10, Academy of Art University became the only four-year art institution in the NCAA after being accepted into its membership process.  The Division II Membership Committee accepted the University's application during a July 7-9 meeting in Indianapolis. Out of 15 colleges and universities that applied, the Academy of Art University was one of just seven institutions received by the NCAA.

“To say that we are ecstatic is an understatement,” Athletic Director Dr. Jamie Williams said. “We absolutely believe in the process, our mission, and the opportunity to be representative of the only art establishment in the NCAA. Our goal is to continue to exceed expectations and be a viable opportunity for students who want to grow academically, athletically… and be artist.”

Academy of Art University, located in San Francisco, California, will begin a two-year candidacy period September 1. Prospective members also must complete at least one year of provisional status before being accepted as full-time Division II members, meaning Academy of Art University could become an active Division II member by fall 2012.

After the Academy of Art University applied at the end of May, the competitive process to review the application started on June 1 and culminated in the middle of July. The department administrators were informed about the decision via conference call on Friday (July 10).

“My family's vision of providing intercollegiate athletics for student-artists took a huge step today with the Academy of Art University's inclusion into the NCAA at the Division II level. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to compete at this level,” stated Academy of Art University President Elisa Stephens.

The Academy of Art University recently completed its first year of intercollegiate athletics competition in May 2009, sponsoring 13 men's and women's teams. The Urban Knights currently compete as a member of the Pacific West Conference.
