ON A ROLL:
The Urban Knights are now on a five game winning streak going into their match with the Pacific Union Pioneers. Dan Yang claimed the first Pacific West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week honor in Urban Knight history for the week of Sept 7 – Sept 13. Yang led AAU to a 3-0 record by hitting .361 and averaging 4.39 points per set - both tops in the PacWest for the week. Yang posted 31 kills, 5 block solos, 3 aces and a block assist in compiling her 39.5 points. She was voted to the William Jessup All-Tournament team following their 3-0 showing.
HOME ON THE RANGE:
Their match with PUC marks the Knights first of the season. Following their match on Sept 15. the Knights return to their home court later in the week to play Dominican University, which marks the start of PacWest conference play. AAU then plays two matches on the road and then hosts a five game home stint against Grand Canyon, Chaminade, and Hawaii Pacific University.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS:
Pacific Union College is coming off a 0-3 loss to UC Santa Cruz before matching-up with the Urban Knights. PUC is led by Heather Jacobson who has 14 kills on the season. Casey Miller is close behind with 10 kills. Madelyn Mauch has dished out a team high 23 assists and the team has combined for a total of five blocks.
SCOUTING THE PENGUINS:
First year PacWest Conference opponent, Dominican University, will make their way to Kezar Pavilion Friday evening to play AAU in the Urban Knights first conference match of the season. DU is 2-8 on the season (as of 9/14/09) and has dropped seven of their last eight matches. The Penguins are led by Gabby Pecora who is third in the PacWest this week in points, averaging 4.00 points per game. She led the league in kills per set (3.80) and has totaled 146 overall kills thus far. Brooke Swingle has notched 246 assists while Ashlee Sand has racked up 25 total blocks.
WILLIAM JESSUP INVITATIONAL:
The Academy of Art didn't drop a set during the three game William Jessup Invitational this past weekend. Junior outside hitter
Dan Yang lead the Knights with a.361hitting percentage and earned All-Tournament honors.
The Urban Knights drew and defeated William Jessup 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-18) in the first match of the tournament.
Yang had 10 kills along with three block solos while
Bush came through with 10 kills and a .438 hitting percentage.
Cheng finished with 32 assists and four kills on four attempts while sophomore libero
Nicolette Hagan notched a match-high 13 digs.
The Urban Knights rolled past Hope International University with a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-22, 25-23).
Yang paced the team with a match-high nine kills and two block solos while freshman setter
Cheng finished with a match-high 12 digs along with her 21 assists.
After defeating Southwestern College 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-13) at the Warrior Challenge, Academy of Art was awarded the championship trophy. Three Knights posted hitting percentages higher than .535 as sophomore outside hitter
Hagan notched seven kills at a .538 clip,
Bush finished with seven kills and a .600 percentage, and sophomore middle blocker
Camille Board hit .556 with six kills. Junior libero
Jelena Jakovljevic posted seven digs in her second match at the position this season and freshman setter
Cheng added 33 assists.
