Game Notes
PACWEST PLAY BEGINS:
Academy of Art University men's soccer officially begins its Pacific West Conference portion of the season with a match against Notre Dame de Namur University this Saturday. The Urban Knights defeated
Bethany University this past week and have maintained their grasp on first place overall in the PacWest standings.
OPENING KICKOFF:
The Knights take on NDNU this Saturday, Sept. 19 at Koret Field in
Belmont, CA. Kickoff for the match is set for 1:30 PM. The following Tuesday, Sept. 24, has AAU scheduled to face Dominican University at Forest Meadows Soccer Field in San Rafael, CA with kickoff at 4:30 PM.
SCOUTING THE ARGONAUTS:
A season ago, Notre Dame de
Namur University stood atop the PacWest Conference with a 9-1-2 league record and a 14-4-3 record overall. This season, however, has been vastly different as the Argonauts have not gotten a win in six matches thus far. NDNU competed against five CCAA schools to begin the season and the squad has been led by forward Cristobal Montes. The sophomore has two goals to his credit along with 22 shots and 10 shots on goal. Defensively, goalkeeper Joseph Mora has 19 saves in just over 431 minutes of action.
SCOUTING THE PENGUINS:
Dominican University, a school similar to AAU because it is playing a full PacWest schedule for the first time this season, has recorded two victories thus far. One was a 2-1 win over
Cal State East Bay and the second was also a 2-1 final in a match against Oregon Tech. Midfielder Pedro Guevara scored both of his team-leading two goals versus CSUEB and has 15 shots this season. Goalie Matthew Carlson has done most of the work between the pipes with 20 saves in a little over 383 minutes.
THE WEEK THAT WAS:
Opening up the season at home,
the Knights earned a 4-1 victory over
Bethany University on Sept. 12. Just 10 minutes into the match, junior forward
Frankie Diaz took a pass from junior forward
Mario Pineda to score the first of what would be three AAU goals in the opening half. Freshman forward
Brazer Bozlak found the back of the net for an unassisted score fifteen minutes later and
Diaz notched his second goal of the afternoon off a penalty kick to give
Academy of Art a 3-0 lead going into halftime. The Knights pushed the lead to 4-0 with a goal by sophomore midfielder
Richard Martin, the first of his career, but the Bruins did manage one score of their own off a penalty kick late in the match. For his two-goal performance,
Diaz was selected to the Pacific West Conference Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll.
MOVING FORWARD:
With the completion of these first two conference matches,
Academy of Art University embarks on set of six consecutive matches at home in
San Francisco. A rematch with NDNU is up first on Sept. 24 followed soon after by a match with
Grand Canyon on Sept. 26. Both matches will take place at Boxer Stadium.
