Game Notes
PACWEST HOMESTAND BEGINS:
Academy of Art University men's soccer is now two matches into its Pacific West Conference season with a 0-2 record. The Urban Knights fell to both NDNU and Dominican in a pair of dramatic outcomes this past week, but AAU kicks off an extended home series this week in which the Knights play seven of their eight conference foes.
OPENING KICKOFF:
This Thursday (Sept. 24) at Boxer Stadium, the Urban Knights face NDNU for the second time in five days. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM. Two days later on Saturday, Sept. 26, AAU welcomes
Grand Canyon to Boxer Stadium for another 3:00 PM start time. Finally, on Monday (Sept. 26),
Academy of
Art plays
Dixie State in the Knights' 11th match of the season at 1:00 PM.
SCOUTING THE ARGONAUTS:
After the 3-2 overtime victory NDNU pulled off against the Knights this past Saturday, forward Cristobal Montes upped his PacWest-leading shot total to 28. Between the two keepers, Joseph Mora and Isaiah Castro, both of whom
Academy of Art saw on Sept. 19, the Argonauts have 30 saves in eight matches with 26 goals allowed.
SCOUTING THE ANTELOPES:
Grand Canyon University defeated No. 1 Cal 2-1 to begin the 2009 season and will be riding a three-match winning streak heading into the meeting with AAU. Forward Kyle Ciliento, the current PacWest Player of the Week, has been on a tear this season with a conference-leading 15 points by way of seven goals and one assist. Between the pipes for GCU, goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio has 20 saves and just five goals allowed.
SCOUTING THE RED STORM:
Like AAU, Dixie State College currently sits in the middle of the PacWest standings in terms of overall record. The Red Storm have primarily been on the road thus far and have victories over Northwest Nazarene and
Mesa State to their credit. Forward Jordan Roylance has three goals this season out of seven shots on goal and two of those scores were game-winners.
Dixie's goalie Tyler McAninch has allowed six goals in five matches with 19 saves.
THE WEEK THAT WAS:
Academy of Art University opened up PacWest play with tough losses to NDNU and Dominican this past week. On Sept. 19, the Knights fell to the Argonauts 3-2 in overtime after a penalty kick in the 94th minute sealed it. The match against DUC was scoreless for 85 minutes before the Penguins managed a goal off a blocked kick in the final stretch. Amid all the heartbreak, freshman forward
Daniel Higa was selected to the PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll for scoring both of AAU's goals versus NDNU.
MOVING FORWARD:
The month of October begins with a matchup against Hawaii Pacific at Kezar Stadium on Oct. 6.
