PacWest Release
Phoenix, AZ -- In an impressive 4-0 week on the Hawaiian islands, seven different Urban Knights were named to the Pacific West Conference Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll, headlined by junior forward Andrew "Boomer" Cruz who garnered Player of the Week. Cruz made PacWest history by becoming the only men's soccer athlete to score five goals in a single match. Six other Academy of Art University men's soccer athletes each played significant roles in the team's victories. The honors were announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ, on Monday, Oct. 4, for games played Sept. 27 - Oct. 3.
Cruz, who now ranks third in the PacWest for total goals scored, completed the week with seven goals, an assist, and 15 total points. His five-goal outburst came in the first 57 minutes of the Knights' 5-0 win at Chaminade on Sept. 29 and cemented him in the conference record books. Easily surpassing the previous mark of three goals set back in 2007, Cruz also had a PacWest record 10 points in the match.
In addition to the incredible feat against CUH on Sept. 29, Cruz had several other heroics during the roadtrip. Earlier in the week, he put in the decisive score in the 26th minute of a 1-0 Knights' win at BYU-Hawaii on Sept. 27 and assisted the second ART U goal in the 3-2 double overtime victory at Hawaii-Hilo on Oct. 1. Cruz then scored the team's first goal in a rematch with Chaminade on Oct. 3, eventually leading to the 2-1 overtime win for Academy of Art University to end the trip.
Setting up Cruz three consecutive times during the five-goal eruption at Chaminade was freshman midfielder Andrew Durano. He became just the third PacWest men's soccer athlete in the last three years to notch three assists in one match. The Portland, Oregon native also assisted the game-winning goal by Cruz in the match at BYU-Hawaii on Sept. 27, eventually finishing the week with four assists in total. Durano currently leads the Urban Knights in that category.
Freshman forward Grimur Grimsson, who had played only sparingly on the Hawaii trip, came through with a huge score in overtime of the rematch with Chaminade on Oct. 3. Grimsson's goal in the 97th minute at St. Louis Field was reminiscent of the one he scored at Menlo to break a 2-2 tie in overtime on Sept. 9. He took a pass from junior midfielder Richard Luna and headed it over a jumping Silverswords goalkeeper, propelling ART U to a 2-1 victory in the extra period.
A significant midseason addition, freshman forward Patrick Heinemann was a critical piece in the Urban Knights' success on the islands. Heinemann began the 2010 season with Academy of Art University's five games in Hawaii and made an impact by assisting two of the goals by Cruz against Chaminade on Sept. 29. During the Knights' comeback against Hawaii-Hilo on Oct. 1, Heinemann forced the match into overtime with his goal in the 55th minute and then passed to senior defender Vilmundur Sveinsson for the game-winner in double OT. Heinemann wrapped up the week with five points on the one goal and three assists.
The assists just keep coming for junior midfielder Richard Luna this season. He picked up a pair in ART U's final match against Chaminade on Oct. 3 in addition to a goal scored earlier in the trip for four total points. Luna's goal came unassisted off a free kick in the 29th minute of the match at Hawaii-Hilo on Oct. 1 and helped the Knights en route to their double overtime comeback. The assists set up Cruz in the 27th minute of the rematch at Chaminade and then Luna assisted Grimsson in the 97th minute for the game-winner.
Stepping in as the goalkeeper in the final four Hawaii matches, sophomore Ian Sutherland was undefeated for the week with a 4-0-0 record including two consecutive shutouts. The Honolulu, Hawaii native helped ART U blank BYU-Hawaii on Sept. 27 and Chaminade on Sept. 29. For the week, Sutherland posted a 0.69 goals against average with 14 saves in 17 shots faced (.824 save percentage). He also totaled 379 minutes of time in goal over the four matches played.
Senior defender Vilmundur Sveinsson has been a leader in all respects for Academy of Art University men's soccer this season. Though not known for his offense, Sveinsson registered a crucial goal and assist during the week to help the Knights earn their victories. In opening minute of the Sept. 29 match at Chaminade, Sveinsson set up the first of five goals by Cruz which turned out to be the decisive score. Then during the second overtime period at Hawaii-Hilo on Oct. 1, the Reykjavik, Iceland native came through with a dramatic game-winning goal in the 101st minute off a pass from Heinemann.
