Urban Knight Volleyball Drops Second Match in a Row to Seasiders

The Academy of Art women's volleyball team was on the losing end of a tough battle tonight against the BYU-Hawaii Seasiders at Kezar Pavilion.  BYU-Hawaii out matched the Urban Knights in almost every category to cruise to a 3-1 victory over ART U (22-25, 15-25, 25-23, 18-25). The Urban Knights have dropped two consecutive matches after a seven game win streak. ART U is now 2-2 in conference play and 9-7 overall. While the Seasiders improve to 6-5 and 3-1 in conference.

"Tonight was a tough match for us defensively," said Head Coach Allison Magner. "We had a tough time with our serve receive, it was obvious that they watched film and were able to pick us apart," Magner continued. The Urban Knights combined for 14 reception errors on the night, a number that is dramatically high.

"We have to work harder to be mentally prepared for these matches," Magner added.

Despite dropping the first two sets (23-25, 15-25) to the Seasiders, a sparkle of the team that once was emerged. In the third set when it looked as if the Urban Knights would receive their fifth sweep of the season, ART U dug deep within and pulled out a win.

The Seasiders opened the set on a 5-0 run. But, a kill by Camille Board, who was a solid for the Knights all game, gave ART U their first point of the set, which sparked a 4-0 run. With BYU-Hawaii six points away from victory, 19-14, the Urban Knights scored nine of the next 11 points to tie the game at 22 a piece. On the very next play the Urban Knights took their first lead of the set, 23-22. With the crowd on their feet ART U rallied past the Seasiders to take the set, 25-23.

"The way the girls responded to the position changes I made in the third set was great," said Magner. "I am really proud of the way they played," she added.

Unfortunately, the Urban Knights were unable to continue the momentum into the fourth set, as BYU-Hawaii cruised to a 25-18 victory.

The Seasiders were led by Losaline Faka'osi who finished the match with 16 kills, 13 digs and three block assist. Julia Becker added 11 kills and eight digs. While Lauren Miller finished the match with 41 assists. As a team BYU-Hawaii outblocked ART U 12-5. BYU-Hawaii is now 6-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

ART U was led by Dan Yang who had a match high 17 kills to go with her 13 digs. Amy Bush added nine kills, while Angela Heath chipped in with seven kills. Cheng dished out 35 assists on the night.

The Urban Knights return to the floor Tuesday Oct 12 when they take on Univ. Hawaii - Hilo. Game time is set for 7:00 PM at Kezar Pavilion.
