Volleyball Pushes Seasiders To The Limit

Laie, HI --- The Urban Knights battled a tough BYU-Hawaii team tonight on the Seasiders home court. Although the Urban Knights came from being down two sets to zero to bring the match to a decisive fifth and final set, ART U came up just a little short, and ultimately dropped the match, 20-25, 16-25, 29-27, 25-16, 10-15. This marks ART U's second loss in a row, dropping them to 7-5 in conference play, 13-10 overall, and keep them win-less against the Seasiders. BYU-Hawaii is now 12-3 in conference play and 14-7 overall.

The Urban Knights had a rocky start tonight at Cannon Activity Center, falling behind two sets early on. In the first ART U was able to keep within one or two points until late in the set. Overall, the Urban Knights combined for more kills (15) in the set than BYU-Hawaii (13), but a few errors down the stretch put the Seasiders up for good, and they closed out the first set, 20-25.

BYU-Hawaii continued to gradually run up the score on the Knights in the second set. With the score 4-9 early in the second, ART U rallied by scoring five of the next seven points to bring them to within one point, 11-10. BYU, however, returned the favor with 10-4 run of their own to catapult them to a 21-14 lead. The Urban Knights would score just two more points before the end of the set, 25-16.

After a brief intermission the Urban Knights returned to the court for set three. Coach Allison Magner must have said all the right things in their huddle, because ART U came alive in the third set. After a back and forth battle at the start, it seemed as if the Seasiders were on their way to a victory as they held a 15-10 lead over the Urban Knights. But after a timeout call by ART U, things turned around. The Urban Knights gradually clawed their way back into the match, and with the score set at 24-19, ART U went on a 7-0 run to give them their first lead of the set, and brought the score to 25-24. Three errors late in the set gave new life to the Urban Knights.

ART U took their momentum from the end of the third straight into the fourth. Toppling the Seasiders 25-16 to take the match to a fifth set. ART U took the lead early on in a fifth. With the score tied 9-9 it was anyone's game, then after two ties and two lead changes, BYU took a 12-11 lead, and three attack errors by ART U gave the Seasiders the set and the match, 15-10.

ART U had many contributors tonight, with Dan Yang finishing the night with a match high 20 kills. Angela Heath added 14 for the Urban Knights “Angela was incredible tonight,” said Head Coach Allison Magner. Both Amy Bush and Camille Board chipped in with nine kills a piece, Bush added five block assists on the night, while Board added two. Leinani Keanini had a team high 19 digs tonight for ART U, and Melissa Cheng dished out a match high 47 assists.

"They believed in themselves tonight. They really played together as a team," added Magner.

The Urban Knights remain in Hawaii for two more games, next up for ART U is Hawaii Pacific University on Thursday Nov 4, opening serve is set for 7:00 PM (Hawaiian time).
