Belmont, CA- Academy of Art University defeated Notre Dame de Namur 9-0, in the women's tennis match Friday afternoon. The Urban Knights swept in both the singles and doubles in order to secure the commanding victory over fellow PacWest conference members. The win improves AAU to a 1-1 record while NDNU falls to 0-1.
“I'm proud of everyone on the team,” Coach Allen said. “This is a good step in the right direction because it was against a conference opponent. I was very happy with the way the team responded in our second match of the season. They were able to shake off their nerves and play at a very high level of tennis.”
The Knights' freshman Diane Phan opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over the Argo's Rebecca Cortez. The match was followed by Laone "Lala" Botshoma's 6-4, 6-0 win against Morganna Hayes. Both Phan and Botshoma would team together in game one of doubles to defeat NDNU's Rebecca Cortez and Morganna Hayes with a score of 8-1. The two Urban Knights made quite the pair during the contest.
“Diane Phan has a great record for us thus far with her 2-0 record,” said Dave Allen. “She came out with a solid win over a very tenacious Corteza from Notre Dame.”
The Urban Knights played hard the entire match, and every player had a major role on the outcome and victory for the team. Paola Correa Fe defeated her singles game 6-0, 6-1, Maria "Belen" Tenorio won 6-0, 6-0, and senior Anna Ritchie won in singles with a score of 6-1, 6-0. The final singles victory came from Cecilia Hedin who won 6-0, 6-0.
The Academy of Art University heads to Grand Canyon to compete in the Paseo Tournament for their next rounds of competition. “The Urban Knights are primed for the Arizona tournament and it's nice to come off a solid performance like this prior to traveling,” said Coach Allen. “It will be a big challenge to play top-ranked BYU-Hawaii there and we are definitely up for the challenge. It should be a great match to have early in the season because it gives us an idea of where we're at.”
The tournament starts on Thursday February 11th for the Urban Knights. They are matched up against Grand Canyon University at 9:30 AM.
