Previous Week Recap: In their “Swing for a Cause” day on March 6th, the Knights swept their opponents. They defeated Patten University 9-0 in five innings, and won over Oregon Tech with a score of 6-5. On Sunday, March 7th, the Knights came up just shy of a complete sweep, as Oregon Tech got the best of them with a score of 6-5; but AAU turned things around to finish on a high note defeating Patten 5-3.
Heading on the Road: AAU will start conference play this week as they are in Hawaii for a week long road trip. In the five days they are in Hawaii, the Knights will play eight total games: four against Chaminade and four against Hilo. As the last PacWest members to start conference play, the Urban Knights are looking to make a big impact as they open up PacWest play on the road this weekend.
Leading the Urban Knights: After the strong weekend, AAU now has a 9-7-1 overall record. They are led offensively by junior Ashley Lokey who has a .456 batting average. She leads with 25 hits, 15 runs scored, five doubles, 33 total bases, and nine walks. Junior Alana Aweau is also standing out with a .333 batting average including 19 hits, two doubles, four home runs, and 19 runs batted in. In the circle for the Knights, sophomore Sierrah Garcia is on top with a 3.16 earned run average with a 6-3 record, and 68 strikeouts recorded. The Knights had three players named to the PacWest honor roll for the week of March 8th.
Scouting Chaminade University: The Silverswords are already off to a much better start this season than last. They have a current record of 4-4 in conference. They are led by Brandi Sasaki who has a .426 batting average, 20 hits, three doubles, one triple, one home run, and nine RBI's. Behind her is Keli– Grace Saniatan who is batting .382 with 21 hits, four doubles, and seven runs batted in. The Silverswords' ace is Kelly Korras who has a 2.87 ERA, giving up 19 earned runs, 20 walks, and posted 24 strikeouts. In their double header against each other last season, the Knights defeated the Silverswords two games to none.
Scouting Hawaii-Hilo: The Vulcans are off to a hot start to their 2010 season. They are 12-5 overall, and sit in third place in the PacWest standings with an 8-4 conference record. Sierra Green is having an impressive season thus far batting .571 with 28 hits, 18 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, and is 8-8 in stolen bases. Green also currently has a .755 slugging percentage. Leading them on the mound is Amber Waracka who has a 7-2 record and a 1.76 ERA. In over 59 innings pitched, Waracka gave up 15 earned runs, 15 walks, and posted 46 strikeouts. As a team they are extremely strong offensively, and combined are batting a .325. This will be the first time the two teams will have faced each other.
Looking Ahead: The women begin their Hawaiian road trip by playing two double headers against Chaminade on Saturday and Sunday, and will play another set of double headers against Hilo on Tuesday and Wednesday. When the road trip concludes, the Knights return home to host Humboldt State University on Sunday, March 21st.
