Davis, CA. - The Academy of Art track team had a stellar day on Saturday, combining to for 17 top 10 finished at the UC Davis Classic at Woody Wilson Track. The UC Davis Classic featured several hundred collegiate, club and unattached competitors.
On the women's side Briana Stewart captured the highest mark in the women's 100 meter hurdles (14.67), while Emily Allis placed fifth in the 400 m hurdles (106.96). “Emily had a season best today in the 400 hurdles”, said Assistant Coach Anne Ricketts.
For the men Aric Armon took fourth in the 400 m dash (55.11) and Durelle Williams bested his previous weeks distance in the in the triple jump (13.84) earning him a third place finish. “Aric had a fantastic day today, running the open 400, 200 and anchoring our A team 4 x 400 in 48.96.”
"We had many season bests across the board. We are gearing up for some of our top athletes to go to Stanford Invite next week," said Ricketts, "We are improving tremendously."
The Urban Knights had a lot of runners trying out different events indeed, as mainly distance runners tackled the short game. “Our distance squad ran 800 and 4 x 400, and did very well”, adds Ricketts
Joey Villasenor, Kennedy Kurgat, Geoffrey Cheruiyot and Aric Armon ran a 3:23.97 in the 4 x 400 and Simon Mutai, Amos Maru, Ezra Tacosa and Daveson Marindich were not far behind in a 3:38.12. Ricketts said this of their performance “Simon had an excellent day today, running his leg in 51.47 - not bad for a distance guy.”
The Urban Knight women had seven placings among the top ten, while the men had four. Kristen Lee finished 10th in the 100 meter dash, while just .01 behind her was teammate Jazmin White. White,
however, would add a top 10 finish of her own in the women's 200 m dash finishing in 26.24.
Irinel Zamfir had a season best in the 800 meter in 2:23 earning her a sixth place finish.
Both teams will be back in full action this Friday when some of the squad will participate in the Stanford Invitational and go against some of the countries top runners. While the rest of the team heads cross town to take part in the SF State Distance Carnival.
