San Francisco, CA- The Academy of Art University’s softball team has signed two stand-out athletes to join the Urban Knights for the fall, announced by head coach Rachel Sherman. The two signees are Genna Allen (Ventura, CA/Sacramento City College) and Katie Brooks (Grover Beach, CA/Arroyo Grande High School). The two will be looked upon to help the Urban Knights next season by adding depth to the infield and on the mound. Both athletes will join the team for the 2010-2011 academic year.
Allen, an infielder, is a transfer from Sacramento City College where she helped lead her team to a second straight Big 8 Conference Championship this past season. In 2010 Genna was a top player on her team with a .342 batting average including 39 hits, 36 runs, seven home runs, nine stolen bases, and a .649 slugging percentage. She also helped her 2010 Sac City team by hitting a grand slam in post season to carry her team into the next round of playoffs. She will major in multimedia communications.
“Genna comes from a good program and will bring great game knowledge and experience to our team,” said Coach Sherman. “Her maturity on the field will help develop our younger players.”
Brooks, a pitcher, will join the team after a successful career at Arroyo Grande High School. In her 2008 and 2009 seasons with the Eagles, she was named to the All League Team, as well as being an All County Athletic Scholar in 2009. During her junior year (2009), she led her team on the mound by posting an impressive 162 strikeouts. This past season (2010), Katie again led her team with a 2.92 earned run average, while keeping her opponents to a .252 batting average. She will major in fashion merchandising.
“I’m excited for her [Katie] to join the team,” said Coach Sherman. “She will be the perfect combination with Sierrah and Kim, and will round out the pitching staff.”
The Academy of Art University’s softball team recently concluded just their second season of softball. The Urban Knights finished with a 29-23-1 record, including a big win over Hawaii Pacific, the 2010 Division II National Champions.
