ART U Out to Bounce Back Against Grand Canyon

Match #17
ART U Urban Knights (5-11, 2-4 PWC) vs. Grand Canyon Antelopes (9-6, 3-4 PWC)
Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 7:00 PM
San Francisco, CA - Kezar Pavilion

OPENING SERVE
The Urban Knights were on the wrong end of a tough week against two PacWest foes, losing four matches in six days to Dixie State and Cal Baptist. Academy of Art dropped matches to the Red Storm on Monday and Tuesday by identical scores of 1-3, and again couldn't find the groove against Cal Baptist, losing both Friday and Saturday's matches 0-3.

MAGNER MAKING MOVES
Magner has been tinkering with the lineup all year, and against the Lancers many players saw time, including freshmen Brittany Ulmer, Julie Cremoux, and Midori Le. One change that has seemed to stick is the return of Melissa Cheng to the starting setter position. "Melissa is in there for her leadership," Coach Magner said. "That girl has beautiful hands, and we've been working with her on some other things off the court, and her leadership has made a tremendous difference both Friday and Saturday."

'LOPES ON THE ROPES
The Antelopes started off the year on a torrid 8-2 run, but most recently were swept by visiting Hawaii Hilo and BYU Hawaii, all four games by 1-3 scores. Grand Canyon rebounded with a 3-0 match victory over Dominican, and will head back to San Rafael to take on the Lady Penguins again after Tuesday's game against the Knights. GCU ranks second in opponent hitting percentage (.143) and first in digs (18.39), with outside hitter Mackenzie Phelps ranking second at 5.36 digs per set. Brooke Blomenkamp, a senior from Gering, NE, is leading the Lopes with 3.13 points per set and 124 total kills. Senior Stephanie McBride has 34 blocks to lead the team in that category.

LOOKING AHEAD
After the match against Grand Canyon, the Urban Knights will stay in California but still make trips on the road to face William Jessup (Oct. 14) and Notre Dame de Namur (Oct. 20). William Jessup plays in the Activities Building in Rocklin, CA, and NDNU play their home matches at Walter Gleason Gym in Belmont, CA. Both games will start at 7:00 PM.
