Knights Outshot, Overwhelmed by Host Chico State

Box Score

Chico, CA -- Yesterday it was the lights-out shooting by San Francisco State that ended up sinking the Urban Knights men's basketball team. Academy of Art dominated at the free-throw line, but it didn't matter in the first game of the Carl's Jr. Mac Martin Invitational. On Sunday against the host Chico State, it was the Wildcats post play that kept the Knights out of the win column again, finishing with an 83-36 victory.

The progress that they had made keeping the Gators off the charity stripe seemed to hit a setback against the Wildcats, sending them to the line 25 times. Chico State made it to the line 17 times in the first half alone after the Urban Knights only allowed 11 free throws in the entire game to SF State.

After the Gators shot at a 59.0% clip on Saturday, the Knights were victims of another great shooting performance, as the Wildcats put up a 49.2% mark from the field. ART U made 82.4% of their free throws yesterday, but then made 40.0% of their shots from the line on Sunday.

The Knights did have 8 steals, but Chico was able to get big contributions from their bench (41 points) and in the paint (32 points) to push a lead to 50 at one point, and the home team never trailed in the loss.

William Overton, Jr. reached double figures offensively, scoring 12 points and pulling down five rebounds. After his 20 points and six rebounds last night, Overton was selected to the Mac Martin All-Tournament Team.

The Knights will play their home opener on Wednesday against Cal State East Bay at Kezar Pavilion, with tipoff at 7:00PM.
