San Francisco, CA -- The Urban Knights played their second exhibition match of the 2011-12 season against UC Santa Cruz, and if there's something positive to be gained from the 68-62 loss, it's that defense can change the game, and that Czar Robotham can score. The Knights were plagued by fouls, out-fouling the Banana Slugs 27-19, and in the end, it was the free throws that ended up being the difference as Santa Cruz made 16 free throws to the Knights 11.
The Knights defense showed that they can make an impact, as they forced 20 turnovers and blocked four shots. Robotham, who had a career-high 21 points for Academy of Art, also added three steals. Hunter Hayden and Mike Jorritsma got into could trouble early and never got the chance to establish a post game, as Hayden fouled out at the 2:17 mark and Jorritsma picking up four fouls. The duo down low did combine for 16 rebounds, but only had 2 points between them.
William Overton, Jr. showed why he was the PacWest Freshman of the Year last season, and also why he is going to be instrumental in the Urban Knights scoring this year, finding the basket for 18 points and six rebounds in only 25 minutes. If Robotham continues to produce, it will make for a formidable backcourt, as the two combined for 39 of the 62 points for the Knights.
The Slugs were led by Samuel Allen, who had 21 points, four assists, and eight rebounds, and Brent Jacobs, who notched a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jacobs was a good example of how free throws changed the game, as he only shot .250 from the field (4-16), but had eight points from the line.
