Grimsson Finishes In Style, Secures Final PacWest Player of the Week Honor

PacWest Release

Phoenix, AZ --
Junior forward Grimur Grimsson tipped his cap to the 2011 season this past Sunday, making history in the finale. In the last Pacific West Conference Weekly Report of the year, Grimsson was named PacWest Player of the Week for the hat trick he incredibly recorded during a 13-minute span in a 3-0 Academy of Art victory against Hawaii-Hilo. The honor was announced by the PacWest Media Office in Phoenix, AZ on Monday, Nov. 7 for games played Oct. 31 - Nov. 6.

For ART U fans, the second period of Sunday's match was unlike any other. Grimsson went to work starting in the 52nd minute with a ball that was arranged nicely by his teammates. First sophomore forward Leonardo Bartelle passed the ball into the box, then senior midfielder Boomer Cruz provided a dummying effect, and ultimately Grimsson converted what would be the game-winner from 18 yards.

Just over a minute later, Grimsson may have surprised UHH with his next trick. A goal kick by junior goalkeeper Ian Sutherland found Cruz in the midfield and then the Seltjarnarnes, Iceland native chipped a shot over the Vulcan goalkeeper from 35 yards out. The third and final goal by the junior was another Bartelle-Grimsson connection that came off a cross into the box a was one-touched to the near post.

The three goals in the season finale gave Grimsson seven total for 2011, which is now second-most in program history for a single season. When Mario Pineda, the first Urban Knight to ever record a hat trick, had his moment in 2009, he had needed 56 minutes to score all three goals. Grimsson, however, made scoring a trio of goals in 13 minutes look effortless.

Grimsson becomes the first ART U player to earn a PacWest Player of the Week honor in 2011 and the second ever to do so. He had previously picked up two PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll selections this season.
