KNIGHT WATCH
After receiving a the Knights' first PacWest Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll selection of the season, junior forward
Grimur Grimsson continues to lead the squad in goals scored (2). His seven shots, however, are second behind sophomore forward
Leonardo Bartelle's 11 and freshman forward
Frederik Nagel's nine. As a team, ART U has been nearly identical to its opponents with a 54-55 shot comparison. Defensively, freshman goalkeeper
Jacob Baumann has played the majority of the time between the pipes (219:09) and has allowed just two goals during that span. He has amassed 10 saves and is tied for fourth in the PacWest in save percentage (.833).
LEARNING THE LANCERS
Academy of Art has never faced Cal Baptist before as the Lancers are new to the PacWest Conference this year. Following back-to-back 2-1 losses to UC San Diego and #25 Cal State Dominguez Hills to start the season, CBU rallied with a 2-1 victory of its own over Claremont Mudd Scripps most recently. Oslvado Batista garnered a 2011 All-PacWest Preseason Team honor and has one goal out of six shots on frame. It is Willie Rupert who currently leads the team with a pair of goals to his name. The lone goalkeeper for the Lancers this season has been Joey Pacheo. In three starts, he has 18 saves and five goals allowed.
SILENCING THE SEA WARRIORS
Hawaii Pacific is 3-1 thus far with a pair of resounding non-conference victories over PacWest opponents Chaminade and Hawaii-Hilo most recently. In the Sept. 9 and Sept. 10 matches, the Sea Warriors combined to not only score seven goals, but they also shut out the Silverswords and Vulcans on each occasion. Alongside senior forward Andrew “Boomer” Cruz on the 2011 All-PacWest Preseason Team, HPU's Chance Bukoski has lived up to the hype thus far. Bukoski leads the Sea Warriors with three goals in four shots on frame and one assist. Seven different Hawaii Pacific players have each tallied an assist as well. In goal, Mael Lefebvre has played all 360 minutes to this point with 17 saves and just three goals allowed.
THE CONFERENCE CHALLENGE
Head Coach Daniel Rosaia and the Academy of Art University men's soccer team play numerous elite teams in the PacWest Conference this season. Last year, the conference had three teams finish with 10 or more conference victories including 2010 PacWest Champion Grand Canyon who was ranked #3 when the Knights faced them in the latter part of the year. As of the third NSCAA West Region poll this season, Notre Dame de Namur and GCU are both among the top five with the Argonauts at #2 and the Antelopes holding #5. HPU is on the outside looking in, receiving votes for that particular poll.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
Academy of Art comes off a week in which the team played two overtime matches. Beginning with College of Idaho on Sept. 5, the Urban Knights went into the first overtime and came out a 2-1 winner when Grimsson nailed a goal in the 95th minute off an assist from sophomore defender
Paul Owens. Three days later, the Knights hosted Menlo for the first match at Boxer Stadium this season and headed into double overtime still scoreless. Despite a solid offensive effort that provided scoring opportunities, the Oaks managed to steal a 1-0 victory with goal off a free kick in the 106th minute.
LOOKING AHEAD
After ART U faces Hawaii Pacific at Boxer Stadium this Tuesday, the Knights will be on the road at Dixie State for a Sept. 23 matchup. It will be Academy of Art's final match of September and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM MDT (6:00 PM PDT).
