San Francisco, CA -- The Urban Knights contained Jet Chang last week in their matchup with BYU-Hawaii on their island road-trip, but they had a tough time repeating that back at home, giving up 24 points to the PacWest scoring leader and dropping the contest to the Seasiders, 84-71. Ameer Shamsud-din continued his impressive first year on the ART U squad by turning in a 26-point, six-rebound performance. Academy of Art rallied midway through both halves, but on each occasion the Seasiders answered with a run of their own.
“I think there were times where we did good things and moved ball well,” head coach Mark Sembrowich said. “We just didn't get enough of it. [BYU-Hawaii] controlled tempo when they really needed to and that was big for them.”
The Knights outshot the Seasiders (42.4% to 41.8%) and had the advantage in rebounding (38 to 33), but the turnover margin was crucial as the Knights cut the lead to six points with 11:24 left in the second half before BYU-Hawaii put the game away.
Shamsud-din was one of three Urban Knights in double figures, as Noah Koné-Nelson had another impressive game, putting in 17 points on a 7-for-11 night from the field. Point guard Czar Robotham also got in on the scoring with 15 points and four assists, and was effective from the free-throw line, going 5-for-6. Aaron Anderson also had a career night on the boards, with a personal best of nine rebounds to go along with his six points and three assists.
“Ameer played well and Noah gave us some good scoring tonight,” Coach Sembrowich said. “I thought Czar also hit some big shots.”
Chang and fellow Seasider Bracken Funk proved to be too much for the Knights, combining for 39 points and nine rebounds for the visiting team. Junior Ale, who had a double-double last game, had a quiet night, putting in 13 points and five rebounds for BYU-Hawaii.
“[BYU-Hawaii] has a good transition game,” Coach Sembrowich said. “And credit to them because I thought they did a better job of controlling the tempo in second half than we did.”
The Urban Knights will face Chaminade for the second time on Monday. The game will start approximately 30 minutes after the women's basketball game between the same two schools at Kezar Pavilion.
