San Francisco, CA -- The laws of physics state that a body in motion will stay in motion until it is met with an equal or greater opposing force. The Urban Knights have been on a roll when it comes to putting up points. Unfortunately, on Monday night, ART U's Czar Robotham and Chaminade's Bennie Murray were the ideal exhibit of that principle, as both put up career-highs in scoring in the offensive slugfest at Kezar Pavilion. After 189 total points, it was the Silverswords who came out on top, 101-88.
Much of that was due to the 34 points from Murray, who made nine field goals—all of them beyond the arc—and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Matt Cousins had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, but was effectively neutralized early on as the Urban Knights put him in foul trouble early and did a good job keeping him off the boards.
"It's a little bit of a chess match," said head coach Mark Sembrowich. "They wore us down inside over at their place and we weren't going to let that happen again. We were going to make them shoot from the outside. He only had five points against us in Hawaii, but credit Chaminade for making the adjustments on their end. That's the way it goes sometimes."
For Robotham, it was simply a continuation of the growth that Academy of Art fans have become used to here in the 2011-12 season. The 27-point outburst on Monday marked the third career-high that Robotham has set this season, and his seven assists also seemed to come as a surprise to no one. Down the stretch, Robotham and Murray were trading buckets, as Czar had 17 points in the second half and Murray had 28.
"Czar is really developing into a top-notch guard," said Sembrowich. "I think he's really shown his ability and his ability to execute. Being just a sophomore it speaks very well of him. I still think he has room to get better, which is a real plus."
Robotham and Murray were not alone in the scoring, however, as there were 10 total players in Monday's game who scored in double digits, five on each team. For Academy of Art, William Overton, Jr. had 18 points, four assists, and two blocks, Aaron Anderson fought through a split lip to score 14 points, and the Knights got 11 points from both Ameer Shamsud-din and Ivan "B.J." Prema, Jr.
The Urban Knights again made a run after being down early, storming back from a 10-point difference at one point in the first half to go on a 9-2 run heading into the locker room. Robotham got things started with a jumper at the 2:15 mark, and then Mike Jorritsma made a pair of free throws to cut the Swords' lead to four. Czar found Anderson for a layup, and then Overton, Jr. hooked up with Prema, Jr. to cut the deficit to one. At the end of the half, Overton went downcourt and found Anderson for the go-ahead layup to give the Knights their first lead of the game at 43-42.
Academy of Art continued its dominance out of the half, using a trey by Shamsud-din to go up five at the 12-minute mark, the biggest lead that the Knights would have. But the Silverswords went on a 13-0 run, including 11 straight from Murray, to take the lead for good. Cousins made a layup at 6:00 to put the Swords up 14, and the Knights were able to bring it back within six with four minutes to play at 88-82 before a crucial 7-point series put the game out of reach for ART U, and Chaminade left San Francisco with a win.
"We played a tremendously efficient game offensively," Sembrowich commented. "We scored 88 points. We only had eight turnovers. We executed a lot of what we wanted to do. Every game that's on the schedule is winnable. If we do things well, we can win every game. You play your game, and hope for the best."
The Urban Knights will play Dominican next Monday before playing Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont on Thursday, February 2nd.
