TIPPING OFF
Academy of Art is coming off a thrilling but disappointing loss against PacWest leader Cal Baptist, falling 74-72 in overtime against the Lancers. Sophomore forward Noah Koné-Nelson had 17 points, five rebounds, and two blocks, and William Overton, Jr. added 16 points and six rebounds. Hunter Hayden was 5-for-5 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line for 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
SCORE, SCORE, AND SCORE SOME MORE
The Urban Knights averaged 66.6 points per game last year, but here in 2011-12, Academy of Art has already topped the 70-point barrier six times, including each of their past three games. ART U set a program best in points with 91 against The Master's College, and also scored 72 against Dixie State and 72 again in their last game against Cal Baptist.
URBAN KNIGHTS ON MILESTONE WATCH
Hayden has already set numerous program records, which shouldn't surprise many who have seen his journey as the first four-year member of the Urban Knights men's basketball team, but he is still within reach of a couple more milestones to add to his resume. The center currently sits at 1963 minutes, and is well within striking distance of reaching the 2000-minute mark on this road trip. He is also close to 100 assists (currently 76) and 100 blocks (currently 73). Overton is only six points away from breaking the program scoring record, set at 626 points by now-graduate assistant Phillip Samuel. Ivan "B.J." Prema, Jr. is also on the watch, totaling 59 career three-pointers, only five behind Weleh Dennis' program-record 63 treys.
CALL OF THE WILDE
Senior forward Zachary Wilde has led the Vulcans in scoring in five of their contests, and is second on the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game. He has also led Hilo in rebounding in seven of their 11 games, averaging 8.5 boards per game and leading the team and the conference in that category. The Vulcans are 6-5, and rank sixth in the league in scoring at 68.2 points per game. Terrell Mack is leading the team with 14.6 points per matchup, scoring a season-high 20 points in the loss to HPU back on December 16.
COUSINS A DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD
Chaminade's Matt Cousins is second in the PacWest in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per contest. He has also shown his double-threat ability, again ranking second in the conference at 7.6 rebounds per game. While Cousins is leading the Silverswords in both categories, Academy of Art will also have to deal with Lee Bailey, who is second on the Swords with 13.2 points per game, and also Waly Coulibaly, who's shooting at a .486 clip from the field and .425 from beyond the arc.
COOL YOUR JETS
Pre-season All-American and Pre-season PacWest Player of the Year Jet Chang is living up to his reputation, and is currently leading the PacWest in scoring at 17.7 points per game. Chang has led BYU-Hawaii in scoring in eight of their eleven games so far, and has scored in double-digits in 10 of those 11 games. The Seasiders have won three in a row, including a record-breaking 126 points in a 126-86 victory over Northwest Indian College, and are currently in second place in the PacWest.
URLI BIRD GETS THE WORM
Hawaii Pacific has won four of the their last five, with Fran Urli leading them in scoring in four of those contests. Urli has really come on in recent weeks, as he's only averaging 9.7 points per game, but has scored in double figures four times this year, including a 21-point outburst against Northwest Indian. The Sea Warriors lost a close one to Chamindade, dropping the game 68-65 last week. HPU ranks last in scoring offense (64.4 ppg), but also ranks as the best defense in the PacWest, only allowing 63.2 points per game.
HOMEWARD BOUND
After their ten day stint in Hawaii, the Urban Knights will return home to welcome BYU-Hawaii (Jan. 21) and Chaminade (Jan. 23) to Kezar Pavilion. Both games will start at approximately 7:30, depending on the finishing time of the women's basketball matchups between the same two teams that start at 5:00 PM.
