HPU Edges ART U In Overtime Heartbreaker

Box Score

Kaneohe, HI --  In a match that was tied most of the way thanks to senior Ian Sutherland and strong Urban Knight defense, Academy of Art University men's soccer fought into double overtime at Hawaii Pacific's Atherton Field on Thursday, but the Sea Warriors found a late goal for the 2-1 victory. A spark off the bench, junior Leonardo Bartelle scored the match's first goal in the 31st minute, however, HPU responded by tying the contest 1-1 at halftime. It was not until a Hawaii Pacific goal in the 102nd minute that the match turned in the Sea Warriors' favor.

“Our guys were able to capitalize on an early mistake and that's what good teams do,” head coach Daniel Rosaia said. “The team went into double overtime ready to win and they played their hearts out. We just came up a little short today.”

Each team had an opportunity for an early lead with Alejandro Porras' shot on frame in the 11th minute and Jesus "Chava" Sanchez's attempt at 23:00. Both were stopped by the respective keepers, but then after the match had gone through 30 minutes of scoreless soccer, Bartelle helped ART U break through. As HPU goalkeeper Mael Lefebvre slipped on the clear, Bartelle found himself with an open net and put his shot away with ease.

Hawaii Pacific did not allow the match to be tied for long, however, as Porras set up Daniel Haehre for a goal in the 40th minute. The halftime whistle sounded and the teams were all knotted up at 1-1. A mere 30 seconds into half number two, Sutherland was put to the test by another attempt from Porras, but Honolulu's own goalkeeper made the save.

“We were happy with how we played in that first half and had the sun as well as the wind behind us in the second,” Coach Rosaia said.

The squads jockeyed for a lead and Sutherland made two more crucial stops in the 73rd and 74th minute to give ART U a chance for perhaps a late goal. Sophomore Runar Gudbjartsson helped keep the defense calm throughout the match and particularly in overtime when Hawaii Pacific sent waves of attacks at the Knights.

Though HPU would challenge, it was Academy of Art University sophomore Frederik Nagel who nearly ended the match in the 91st minute with a header. From there, the Sea Warriors stayed on the offensive and, in the second OT, Haehre came through with the game-winner on a rebound in the 102nd minute for a 2-1 win.

Sutherland continued to offer defensive highlights, finishing this match with six saves in all 101 minutes between the pipes. Bartelle's goal was his first of the season and Gudbjartsson also received praise from Coach Rosaia after the match. The Knights are now 4-12-1 overall and 3-9-1 in PacWest.

“Ian had a great game and was really everywhere for us throughout,” Coach Rosaia said. “Runar was great heading out balls in the back for us.”

The Sea Warriors, 8-6-1 overall, 7-3-3 in PacWest, had Haehre do all their scoring Thursday with his two goals while Porras provided one assist. Defensively, Lefebvre notched two saves with one goal allowed in his complete game.

ART U concludes its 2012 season this Saturday, Nov. 3 when the Urban Knights will face UH Hilo at Amauulu Field on the Big Island at 6:00 PM HST (9:00 PM PST).
