OPENING SERVE
The Knights had an interesting week last week, as their match against Sonoma State was postponed when a transformer outside the San Francisco Tennis Club blew out. The Knights stayed dark when they went to Cal State Stanislaus, falling 7-2 to the Warriors.
Diane Phan made a triumphant return after injury, winning her singles match and
Courtney DeWalt and
Daniela Amelunge Antelo won the #3 doubles match for ART U. They now head to Dixie for the Dixie State Tournament in St. George.
SEE-SAW STORM
Dixie State has seen their season alternate good and bad in the early going, winning two matches to start off their fall season, but then dropping the next two. They then rebounded with two more wins in the spring, but recently dropped two matches to CSULA and BYU-Hawaii before defeating Dominican. And in their most recent matchup, the Red Storm lost to Southern Utah 7-2. Dixie has a strong doubles team in the #2 spot, with two Allison's notching the most wins for the Storm so far. Allison Evans and Allison Long are 3-4 for Dixie in doubles play, and will look to improve that on their home court while hosting this tournament.
BREAKING THE RANKS
The Knights broke into the ITA Division II West Region rankings this past week, coming in at No. 8 in the region. Kunkanda Phukchampa ranks as the No. 15 player in the region, with doubles partner
Amal Ben El Hadj right behind her at No. 18. The two team up to rank as the No. 6 best doubles team in the conference as well.
STREAK OF THUNDER
The Thunderbirds are playing only their second match of the spring season against the Knights as they head into the tournament, already winning the first match to Dixie State 7-2. SUU didn't lose a set to the Red Storm but played with only five healthy players last weekend. According to the team website, the team will likely compete with just five again this week. As a team the Thunderbirds have won 14 consecutive regluar-season matches and have won 14 of 15 overall. Junior Olia Tatarchenko won her 14th consecutive match, dating back to last season.
NEGATIVE, GHOST RIDER
The Mavericks have been flying high since the end of their fall season, sweeping all of their matches after the ITA Tournament. except one, an 8-1 victory over Dixie State. Colorado Mesa's Kelleen Sera was Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year as voted on by the coaches, and pushed her record to 6-0 in dual matches at #2 singles in the fall season. The Dixie State Tournament will be their first competition of spring after finishing up the fall with a 4-3 record.
ON THE DOCKET
The Knights will have a busy week once they get back, taking on Notre Dame de Namur on March 11 in Belmont. They will then face San Jose State on March 16 in San Jose, and finally host Dixie State in San Francisco on March 17.
