San Francisco, CA -- The Knights continued their winning ways on Sunday against Notre Dame de Namur, winning 9-0 in Belmont for their fourth victory in a row. Academy of Art swept all of their matches, pushing their singles winning streak to 30 straight dating back to the Dixie State Tournament last week.
After defeating Dominican on Saturday, the Urban Knights went into Belmont with an eye on capturing the title of best in the Bay Area, and arguably did so in convincing fashion. The Argos, who only had five players active for Sunday's matchup, forfeited the final doubles match and the last two singles matches by default. The Knights also go the opportunity to get everyone on the court and get some much-needed experience in live competition.
"It was a strong effort by the entire team," said head coach Jerry Peach. "We had strong play from everyone in the lineup, and that once again made for a tremendous team win."
Paola Correa Fe and
Courtney DeWalt got the nod in the #1 doubles spot, defeating their NDNU counterparts 8-1.
Cecilia Hedin and
Sarah Lemp filled the #2 spot, beating Maria Galmdo and Katie Rosas 8-0.
Jenny Johansson and
Maria "Belen" Tenorio got the win by default in the third spot.
Johansson impressed in the #1 singles spot, winning 6-1, 6-0. Tenorio rebounded from a loss in the first game to defeat Morganna Thomson-Hayes 4-6, 6-0, 10-6. Correa Fe (6-0, 6-1) and DeWalt (6-0, 6-0) also won their matches, and Hedin and Lemp got the default wins against the Argos.
"The team is starting to gel a little bit as we get more used to competition," Peach said. We're working our way up the ladder, but we've got some tough matches up ahead, as we look to face San Jose State and Dixie State again. But we're attacking those challenges a lot better than we were a couple weeks ago."
The Knights will face the Division I Spartans on Friday, and set their sites on welcoming Dixie State to San Francisco on Saturday.
