San Francisco, CA -- The Urban Knights had their match with Dominican rained out yesterday, but were determined to get today's match against Notre Dame de Namur in while the weather was good. It was a good thing they did, as the Knights shook off the wet weather from this week and rolled on the Argos, earning a 9-0 sweep.
"We really needed to get this match in," said head coach Jerry Peach. "The rest of our conference is out there in Hawaii or in the desert and hitting the ball right now, and with the tournament only a week away, we needed to get out on the court."
Peach did everything in his power, coming to the San Francisco Tennis Club in the early morning to start squeegeeing off the courts himself after last night's downpour. The Knights came out on fire, sweeping doubles play in three quick matches.
Kunkanda "Cartoon" Phukchampa teamed up with
Jenny Johansson to defeat Rebecca Corteza and Morganna Thompson-Hayes 8-1.
Amal Ben El Hadj returned to the court, pairing with
Daniela Amelunge Antelo to win their matchup 8-1 as well, and the duo of
Cecilia Hedin and
Sarah Lemp handled their opponents 8-0.
That strong performance continued into singles play, as the Knights won every singles match on the way to their second sweep of the Argos this year. Johansson, still a freshman, continued her strong stretch with a 6-0, 6-0 win in #1 singles, pushing her personal singles streak to six in a row. She has won nine of her last ten matches, and is 12-5 on the season, primarily in the #4 and #5 spots. But with Ben El Hadj only recently returning from illness, Johansson has been elevated to the #1 doubles team, going 2-1 with senior Phukchampa.
Amelunge Antelo (6-1, 6-1),
Diane Phan (6-0, 6-0), and
Paola Correa Fe (6-0, 6-1) also won their matches handily. After
Sarah Lemp defeated Katie Rosas 6-0, 6-0, both teams gathered to watch the finale between Hedin and Emily Castro. The match was the longest of the day, but Hedin didn't disappoint, winning against her opponent 6-1, 6-3.
The Knights will play Mills College later this week, and will possibly try and make up their match with Dominican that was canceled on Tuesday.
