ART U Hits Late Bump In Road Leading to PacWest Championships

Match Results

San Francisco, CA --
The Urban Knights went up against a formidable foe on Tuesday, taking on the #1-ranked Seasiders of BYU-Hawaii, and despite their momentum from a three-match win streak, fell to the best team in Division II by a score of 9-0. Academy of Art got some good matches out of their third doubles team and out of Daniela Amelunge Antelo in third singles, but were unable to make a dent in the Seasiders' perfect season.

The trouble started in doubles play, as the #1-ranked doubles team in the country took out the Urban Knights first singles team in Kunkanda "Cartoon" Phukchampa and Jenny Johansson 8-0. Amelunge Antelo and and Amal Ben El Hadj lost to their opponents, #9-ranked Yuan Jia and Marietta Tuionetoa 8-3, but the third doubles team of Diane Phan and Paola Correa Fe put up a good battle before succumbing 8-5.

That lead sustained into singles play, as top-ranked singles player Annie Hwang defeated Phukchampa 6-1, 6-0. Sherry Liu, ranked sixth by the ITA, handled Ben El Hadj 6-1, 6-1. Amelunge Antelo had a strong showing against #8-ranked Jia, fighting to the end in the second set but falling 6-1 7-5. Freshman Jenny Johansson, coming off a PacWest Player of the Week selection, had her singles streak halted at six as she lost 6-1, 6-2, and Diane Phan (6-0, 6-0) and Correa Fe (6-1, 6-2) also dropped their matches to their BYU-Hawaii opponents.

The Urban Knights will have a day off before heading into the PacWest Championships on Thursday at Dominican.
