San Rafael, CA - The Academy of Art women's tennis team had a tall order to live up to, and in order to advance to the program's first conference finals appearance had to upset NCAA's #1-ranked team and top PacWest seed BYU-Hawaii. The Urban Knights battled, but the Seasiders continued their dominance of all comers, ending ART U's chances at their first conference title with a 5-0 defeat.
Academy of Art was coming off a 5-1 win over Chaminade to get by the first round and finally secure a chance to finish above fifth place, their finishing spot for the past two years. But the Seasiders, who have only last three matches since 2007 and have been ranked #1 in Division II tennis for a while now in 2012, weren't interested in letting the Urban Knights play David to their Goliath, and swept all three doubles matches from the Knights in a replay of Tuesday's matchup between these two teams. The first four doubles matches remained unfinished, but BYU-Hawaii took the fifth and sixth singles over
Sarah Lemp and
Cecilia Hedin to defeat the Knights.
Academy of Art will play for third place in the tournament on Saturday against Grand Canyon, who lost their matchup with #2-seed Hawaii Pacific 5-0 as well. The Lopes defeated the Urban Knights earlier this year 9-0, but that was way back on February 10th in the back-end of a doubleheader for ART U. The lineup since then has gone through some changes, and the moving parts have Academy of Art confident in their chances at a win.
