San Rafael, CA - The Urban Knights lost their third-place match with Grand Canyon on Saturday, but still had their best finish in the PacWest Tournament in program history, ending the day in fourth place overall. The Knights came out of doubles down 2-1, and in the best of five series, were unable to mount a comeback against the Lopes, dropping the match 5-1. Senior
Kunkanda "Cartoon" Phukchampa was honored by the PacWest head coaches, winning the coveted Sportsmanship Award.
The Urban Knights sole victory came in second doubles, when
Daniela Amelunge Antelo and
Amal Ben El Hadj defeated Priscilla Annoual and Kaila Knopf 8-3. Katharina Mittag and Frederique Van de Velde took down Phukchampa and
Jenny Johansson in first doubles, and Justine Majan and Cecilia Vergnet won 8-1 over
Diane Phan and
Paola Correa Fe to take the 2-1 lead.
Grand Canyon was able to secure third place after winning three singles matches. Phukchampa fell in first singles, and Amelunge Antelo also dropped her match in third singles. Vergnet then defeated Correa Fe in sixth singles to end the Knights hopes at a third place finish. BYU-Hawaii took their seventh straight PacWest title, while Hawaii Pacific finished in third place. In the consolation bracket, Dominican upset Dixie State, and Hilo defeated Chaminade to claim fifth place.
Academy of Art still has games left on their schedule, and will celebrate their seniors tomorrow in a match against Sonoma State at the San Francisco Tennis Club. Phukchampa, Correa Fe,
Cecilia Hedin, and
Maria "Belen" Tenorio are all in their final year as Urban Knights.
