Anaheim, CA -- For outstanding service to the San Francisco community, Academy of Art University has been selected as one of two recipients of the 2011-12 Pacific West Conference Community Engagement Award. Sharing the honor along with Dixie State College of Utah, the Urban Knights worked diligently this past season to see an increase of more than 12 community service events compared to 2010-11. The announcement was made during the 2012 PacWest Conference meetings held May 28 - June 1 in Anaheim, CA.
“We are extremely proud of our Athletic Department for the commitment it made to the Bay Area community this year,” said Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of Academy of Art University. “In today's difficult economic times, we need to come together and support each other as a community, and we commend the student-athletes for taking the time out of their busy schedules to help others in need.”
The annual award recognizes outstanding community service and projects performed by a PacWest member's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). A panel reviews the nominations and chooses a winner. The universities will each receive a plaque commemorating their selection.
“Community service and engagement is a vital part of personal development and balance,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Jamie Williams. “To see our student-athletes embrace the opportunity to provide much-needed service and support to a variety of causes is beautiful. I salute the PacWest Conference for acknowledging the efforts of these young people, led by our SAAC Advisor and Assistant AD, Meghan Bushnell.”
Academy of Art University's goal for the 2011-12 season was for each of its 16 teams to complete three community service events throughout the year; one in season and two out of season. The Urban Knights took on the challenge valiantly and each team completed the desired amount. Participating in various types of service, ART U focused on themes of: Health Awareness, Community Improvement, and Youth Mentorship.
The year was highlighted by Academy of Art University's participation in events such as Project Open Hand where meals are provided to people living with serious illnesses in the San Francisco and Alameda counties, a SAAC Clothing Drive in which ART U donated over 600 items to Larkin Street Youth Services, and the Knights' involvement in the San Francisco Firefighters Toy Program which distributed toys to underprivileged youth in the local community.
“We are incredibly honored to win the 2011-12 PacWest Community Engagement Award,” said Meghan Bushnell, SAAC Advisor and Assistant Athletic Director; External Relations & Student-Athlete Development. “One of our goals for this academic year was to increase our role as servant leaders to the San Francisco Bay Area community. This honor and accomplishment was a true team effort between the Urban Knights family; starting with the vision from the Administration and finishing with a valiant effort from our artist-athletes and coaching staff. As we continue to build our athletic program, our artist-athletes are determined to make a difference within the Bay Area, while our community is gaining inspiring relationships with the ART U Urban Knights. Art who? ART U!”
This marks the second time in the five-year history of the award that the honor has been shared. Notre Dame de Namur and Dixie State were co-recipients of the award in 2011 while Dominican University of California secured the honor in 2010. Prior to that, Dixie State was given the award in 2009 and Chaminade University of Honolulu captured the inaugural award in 2008.
