TIPPING OFF
After a lengthy holiday break, the Urban Knights are hitting the road to start 2013, taking their annual trip to the Hawaiian islands to take on three of the four Hawaiian schools in the PacWest Conference. The last action for the Knights saw them take down their final non-conference opponent in Simon Fraser University on December 19 by a score of 71-68.
AMEER AMAZES
For the third time this season, senior
Ameer Shamsud-din notched an appearance on the
PacWest Weekly Fantastic 15 (Dec. 17-23) for his performance in ART U's aformentioned victory over SFU prior to the holiday break. Shamsud-din totaled 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win. The senior offered two balanced offensive halves and finished the evening 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
FIRST UP: THE SHARPSHOOTING SEA WARRIORS
Academy of Art split the season series with the Sea Warriors last year, including their first program win on the islands with a 76-68 victory last January. This year, they'll be taking on a team that is currently in the top five in the country in shooting from beyond the arc, hitting triples at over 47% for the year. The Sea Warriors were in control their last game of the year against Champion Baptist College, roughing up the Tigers by a score of 109-51. The Knights will have to deal with Malte Ziegenhagen (14.4 ppg) and three other Sea Warriors who are averaging at least 9.0 points per game.
LOOKING FOR HOME AWAY FROM HOME
The Urban Knights have three wins on the season and all three have come in the friendly confines of Kezar Pavilion. Combined with ART U's women's basketball team, the Knights have won seven in a row in San Francisco to start the season. Now the Knights are looking to find that same success on the road, where they will play six of their next nine games.
ACT TWO: THE STREAKY SEASIDERS
BYU-Hawai'i has started off the year with three streaks so far this year, dropping three straight to start the year. They followed that up with four wins in a row, including two wins scoring over 100 points. Most recently, they were back in the loss column, losing against Cedarville and Long Beach State to put them back under .500 on the season. BYU Hawai'i is the leading scoring offense in the conference at the moment, and is led individually by DeAndre Medlock (15.6 ppg) and Okesene Ale (15.1 ppg).
CLOSING NUMBER: SILVERSWORDS HIT THE SKIDS
Chaminade made national headlines when they took down the University of Texas at the EA Sports Maui Invitational back on November 19, but haven't been able to add to their win total in the since then, dropping six in a row, including their first two PacWest meetings. De'Andre Haskins is leading the way for the Swords and is second in the conference at 19.6 points per game, including a team-high 32 points against the Longhorns in the upset win. Bennie Murray (14.1 ppg) and Lee Bailey (12.3 ppg) are both also in the top 25 in the conference. Haskins (.857) and Bailey (.829) are also ranked in the top ten in free-throw percentage in the conference.
ON THE REBOUND
After playing in Hawai'i, the Knights will host the final island school when they return home, taking on UH Hilo on January 19th. Hawai'i Pacific (Jan. 21) and Chaminade (Jan. 26) will also visit Kezar Pavilion before Academy of Art hits the road again to Southern California to continue the PacWest conference.
