Three-Game Stretch Ends In Loss At CBU

Box Score
Riverside, CA -- On the last game of their grueling three-day, three-game road trip, the Academy of Art University volleyball team came up short and fell to California Baptist University in three sets at Van Dyne Gym. The Urban Knights were never able to get anything going on the offensive end as the Lancers held them in check, defeating the Knights 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-14).

ART U was back and forth with the Lancers in the first set, holding a 13-11 lead before a 5-0 run gave them a lead they didn't relinquish. They would add another 5-1 run later to make it 24-17, and although the Knights stayed alive with a kill from Emily Papale and a block from Caitlin Boring and Brittany Ulmer, they couldn't hold off match point longer than that, and the Lancers took the first set.

It was the same story in the second set, as the Urban Knights battled some more, but were never able to overtake the Lancers. The score was tied 4-4, and although the Knights were never more than three points behind up until it was 21-18, they didn't pull even and they ended up falling 25-20. In the third set, CBU turned a 12-10 Academy advantage into a 9-0 run and a 19-12 Lancer lead, which carried them the rest of the way to the match sweep.

ART U was led by Papale with eight kills, while Rachael Smith had 21 assists and Melissa Brum was one of three Knights with double-digit digs, totaling 22. Jenna Perry had nine kills to lead CBU, while setter Taylor Parker had 28 assists. ART U out blocked the Lancers 8-to-7, with Boring leading the way with five total blocks.

The Academy of Art squad will play two games at home against Bay Area opponents Holy Names and Dominican before hitting the road to Hawaii to end the month.
