Phoenix, AZ -- Though just a freshman,
William "Willy" Velasco Villa has made a tremendous impact for Academy of Art University Men's Soccer now 13 matches into the 2013 season. The Sacred Heart Cathedral High School product earned his first Pacific West Conference Weekly Final 5 honor after scoring five points in his previous two matches during a 1-0-1 week for the Urban Knights. The conference announced the honor on Monday, Oct. 21, for matches contested Oct. 14 - 20.
Velasco Villa got started with a goal and an assist in ART U's 4-1 victory over Dixie State on Oct. 14. Contributing to the Knights' equalizer by
Mike Anderson in the 33rd minute, Velasco Villa sent a through ball from 30 yards out and picked up the assist before scoring himself in the 46th minute off a throw in from
Sylvester Gyan.
Then against Holy Names on Oct. 19, Velasco Villa helped raise Academy of Art from a 1-0 deficit in the 83rd minute, scoring a goal off
Malcolm McLellan's setup to tie the match. It would eventually lead to a double-overtime draw.
Thus far, Velasco VIlla is tied with
Jon "Jay" Eldon for third on the team in total goals (3) and sits alone with the third-most points scored (8).
This is the first weekly honor for Velasco Villa this season.
