Box Score
Laie, HI -- Facing off against the fifth-ranked team in the country in BYU-Hawaii, the Academy of Art University women's volleyball team gave a battle throughout, but were overcome by the Seasiders in three sets as they fell 25-21, 25-15, 25-18. Friday night was the second of three games in three days for the Knights, and although they had spurts of good play against an impressive BYUH squad, they dropped the game with one more chance to earn a win on the islands tomorrow night.
The Urban Knights were much quicker to find their groove than they were on Thursday, but against a much tougher opponent, their margin of error was much more narrow. They did show some real fire, rallying from down 18-11 to force a Seasiders timeout at 18-15. ART U cut it to 22-19 as BYU-Hawaii took another timeout, but couldn't get over that last hump, as the Seasiders won the first set 25-21.
The second set had flashes of brilliance for the Knights, who got some real good-looking kills but weren't able to get them in sequence at all, as the Seasiders took a 13-6 lead early on. It seemed that every time the Knights got a point, BYU-Hawaii was able to go on a run, going ahead 17-9. The Knights battled back to 22-15, but a three-point run at the end of the set gave it to the home team as the Seasiders went up 2-0.
It was another battling set in the third and final game, as the Knights were down early but kept pace with the Seasiders. The score went from a 7-5 BYUH advantage to a 10-5 game, but the Knights closed to 11-9. From there the Seasiders went on another run to make it 17-9, but Academy of Art again battled back to 22-17 before the match slipped away from them in the final set.
Emily Papale led the Knights with eight kills, while
Caitlin Boring had seven kills on a .583 hitting percentage.
Lindsay Elgin had five kills (.400 H%) and
Brittany Ulmer had four (.364 H%), putting up good numbers on the attack, but the volume wasn't there as those two only combined for 21 attempts.
Rachael Smith had 27 assists for ART U. Stella Chen led the Seasiders with 20 kills as BYU-Hawaii hit .342 on the match.
The Urban Knights will travel on Saturday to play UH Hilo in their Hawaii finale before heading back to the mainland to wrap up the season.
