Phoenix, AZ -- Continuning his breakout season,
Jonmundur Gretarsson added two goals and an assist in a three-match week for Academy of Art University Men's Soccer to earn himself a spot on the Pacific West Conference Weekly Final 5. The conference announced the honor on Monday, Oct. 7, for matches contested Sept. 30 - Oct. 6.
Gretarsson started the week by assisting the first goal of the non-conference match between ART U and Dominican on
Sept. 30 with the setup for
Jon "Jay" Eldon in the 21st minute. Though the Penguins quickly responded with a goal of their own, Gretarsson would later add an insurance goal in the 68th minute, catching a rebound from
Leonardo Bartelle and putting into the net to contribute to the 3-1 final.
In the rematch the teams played this past Sunday (
Oct. 6), Gretarsson struck in the 87th minute for what would end up being the game-winning goal. He broke through on a counter attack which led to a one-on-one with the Dominican goalkeeper and Gretarsson's fifth goal of the year to cap off the Urban Knights' 2-1 week.
Currently the team's scoring leader, Gretarsson ranks fifth in the PacWest in goals (5), sixth in points (13), and seventh in assists (3).
This is the first weekly honor for Gretarsson this season and the second in his Academy of Art career.
