Knights Final Day Swept Away By High Winds

Results

Chico, CA -- After the first day of the Chico State InterWest Wildcat Classic ended with the Academy of Art University men's golf team showing some improvement from the first round to the second, the third and final round was swept away by extremely high winds, as tournament directors decided the conditions were too hazardous to continue. The Knights finished ahead of PacWest foe Notre Dame de Namur, while Tommaso Vielmo and Thomas Krepp each shaved significant amounts off their first round scores in the tournament.

Eugene Wang led the Knights on the first day just as his sister Crystal led the women's team in Washington on the same day, shooting a 74 in the first round and 76 in the second to finish at 150 (+6). Alberto "Dago" Esponda shot one over in the first round but faltered during the second, finishing with a final of 154 (+10). Vielmo cut five strokes off his first round score to finish at 161, while Dat Do lost a stroke in the second round to finish at 165. Krepp took off seven strokes in the second round to finish the tournament with a 171. Chico's own Ricky Owaki finished in first (137), followed by Cal State Stanislaus's Anthony Manguray (140) and then a three-way tie for third place between Trevor Clayton (CSUS), Lee Gearhart (Chico St.), and Bret Thompson (Simon Fraser).

#11 Chico State would finish first overall with a score of 571, followed by Cal State Stanislaus (529), Cal State East Bay (593), Simon Fraser (594), and Western Washington (597). In the PacWest, the top finisher was Dixie State, who was in sixth place. Holy Names finished tenth, followed by Dominican in 12th, the Knights in 14th, and NDNU in 15th overall.

The Knights will be back on the links next week at the Sonoma State Fall Invitational in Santa Rosa, CA.
