Box Score

Kaneohe, HI – Academy of Art University Men's Soccer closed out its Hawaii roadtrip with quite the exclamation mark Saturday as the Urban Knights triumphed over Hawaii Pacific 2-1 in overtime. Thanks to an early goal by Carlos Hernandez, the game-winner from Jon "Jay" Eldon, and spirited play throughout, ART U could return home with the momentum of a historic win. The victory was special for multiple reasons as it set the new program record and marked the first for Academy of Art over Hawaii Pacific in seven historical meetings.

In the ninth minute, Hernandez struck to put the Urban Knights ahead 1-0 right away. Kristof Urbanyi supplied the quick corner kick to Hernandez who broke through for a goal to the top left corner from 25 yards out. That advantage lasted for only five minutes, however, because Erik Kemsies of Hawaii Pacific used a short cross by Felipe Silva to set up a leaping tap in for the equalizer.

From the 15th minute onward through the end of the half, both sides looked for a lead, but it did not come. The Sea Warriors attempted three more shots in the period though none were on frame. In the second half, it was more of the same as no attempts came directly on goal until the final 12 minutes when ART U sent a barrage at HPU goalie Mael Lefebvre.

Thorvaldur "Thobbi" Sveinsson started it off in the 78th minute, followed by Jonmundur Gretarsson in the 84th minute, and Eldon with his second attempt in the 85th minute. All were saved by Lefebvre and, in the waning minutes, Gretarsson sent a nifty give-and-go to Urbanyi, but his attempt went high. That gave Academy of Art six shots in the final 18 minutes of regulation, setting up what figured to be a thrilling overtime period.

In overtime, after the Knights dodged a bullet with a HPU corner kick, a fortunate offsides call, and later a dangerous shot attempt by Brais Garcia which Joshua Leader stopped in the 97th minute. Just 16 seconds later, the match's thrilling finale was written. From the top of the penalty box, Eldon sent the ball hooking to the right, off the post, and into nothing but net. Soon the Knights were celebrating an extremely exciting 2-1 overtime win.

The win elevates ART U's record to 9-5-3 overall and 6-3-2 in PacWest. Goals went to Hernandez and Eldon while Urbanyi provided one assist (his second of the year). It was the first goal for Hernandez this season and Eldon's fourth on the year. Defensively, Leader finished with two saves and one goal allowed in all 98:13 minutes.

Hawaii Pacific falls to 8-5-2 overall (6-3-1 PacWest) on the year despite their goal from Kemsies and assist from Silva (PacWest points leader). Lefebvre finished with three saves and the two goals allowed in a complete 98:13.

Just one match remains on the 2013 Academy of Art schedule and it will be inside Kezar Stadium on Nov. 9. ART U battles Fresno Pacific at 4:00 PM with eight Urban Knight seniors (Jacob Baumann, Sylvester Gyan, Leonardo Bartelle, Patrick Heinemann, Jonmundur Gretarsson, Andrew Durano, Aron Ekberg, Luis Barrera) to be honored prior to kickoff.
