Backcourt Brilliant, Bring in PacWest Honors

Phoenix, AZ -- After two busy weeks of Urban Knights athletics, the Academy of Art University men's basketball team had three more representives on the PacWest Weekly Fantastic 15. Alex Carmon made the grade for the week of Jan. 28 - Feb. 3, while Carmon was joined by Ameer Shamsud-din as the two received the honors in the most recent edition of the report. The honors were announced by the PacWest offices on Monday, Feb. 11, for games played Feb. 4-10.

Carmon had a successful road trip back home to Southern California, averaging 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in the two games against Point Loma Nazarene University and California Baptist. The Long Beach, CA native also added 4.0 assists per game and shot 15-for-21 from the free throw line, making 10 free throws in the loss to CBU.

The next week Carmon averaged 22.0 points per game while shooting 58.8% (10 for 17) from the floor in a 1-1 week for the Urban Knights, which tied for second in scoring in the PacWest for the week. The redshirt freshman had a team-high 25 points against Azusa Pacific, with 14 of those points coming from the charity stripe, and another 19 points, with eight from the line, in the near-upset of Dixie State on Saturday. The selections marked Carmon's sixth and seventh selections of his career.

Shamsud-din averaged 22.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 three-pointers made per game in a 1-1 week for Academy of Art last week, matching Carmon for the second-best scoring average of the week. The senior had 24 points on 53% shooting against APU, and another 20 points against California Baptist. It was the seventh selection of the year for Shamsud-din, and the seventeenth of his career.
