TIPPING OFF
The Academy of Art University men's basketball team posted another 1-1 week last week, defeating Azusa Pacific on getaway day on their recent trip to Southern California. They followed that up with a near-upset of first place Dixie State, leading the Red Storm with seventy seconds left but came up just short, falling 82-80.
KILLIAN ME SOFTLY
Grand Canyon junior center Killian Larson has been doing it all for the Antelopes, leading the team in scoring in seven games while pulling down the most rebounds for GCU in 17 contests, including the last seven straight. Larson, who transferred from Dominican, is first in the PacWest in total rebounds (207) and second in the conference in rebounds per game, grabbing 8.6 per contest. The Knights will have to deal with Larson (11.0 ppg) and Joshua Lowery (13.5 ppg) on the scoring front in their last matchup with the Lopes before they make the jump to Division I next year.
CARMON LIVING AT THE LINE
Redshirt freshman
Alex Carmon has made a habit of driving to the bucket and drawing contact, and as a result has seen his free throw attempts and subsequently his makes go way up. Carmon has taken at least 10 free throws in the past three games, and has made at least 10 free-throws on three separate occasions. He had at least 20 points with at least 10 from the line in back-to-back games, and his 86 made free-throws this year already rank the third-most for a single season, and his .804 mark from the line is the highest in program history.
SUNBIRDS SCORING AT WILL
Fresno Pacific has leaped up into the PacWest in its first year, compiling a 15-7 record, mostly behind a high-powered offense that has averaged 86.5 points per game. The Sunbirds have scored over 100 points on four separate occasions this year, and in their seven losses, the least amount they have been able to put up 65 against Cal Poly Pomona. They're led by PacWest leader John Taylor (24.5 ppg) and fourth-leading scorer Malcolm Griffin (17.6 ppg). A side effect of the high potency offense is that they give up a lot of points as well, allowing an eleventh-place 78.3 points per contest.
PREMA TOPS CAREER MINUTES MARK
Ivan "B.J." Prema, Jr. recently surpassed long-time Urban Knight
Hunter Hayden for the most minutes played in a career, heading into this week's matchups with 2274 minutes under his belt. He has the second-most games played in program history, coming up on the century mark. Prema has sustained his career numbers almost to the decimal point, averaging 25.0 minutes per game in 2012 (23.4 career), 2.9 rebounds per game (2.8 career), and 6.1 points per game (6.1 career).
BRIDGE BATTLE BEARS WEIGHT
The Urban Knights are champing at the bit to face off against their Golden Gate rivals Dominican, as the Knights will have 21 games this year before they face the Penguins for the first time. They'll face Dominican twice in four games to end the year, and will have a lot riding on it as they are currently two games behind the Penguins in the loss column. Dominican is led this year by Devin Golston (12.9 ppg) and Jammall Clark (11.3 ppg), and have won three of four heading into this week.
ON THE REBOUND
The Knights will have one more home game, their Senior Day, against Notre Dame de Namur on Feb. 23, and will finish the season with two games that are technically on the road but still close to home, facing Holy Names on Feb. 26 and Dominican again on March 2.
