TIPPING OFF
The Urban Knights are playing their final home game of the 2012-13 season on Saturday against Notre Dame de Namur after a photo finish loss against Dominican on Tuesday. The Knights, who are coming off a tough stretch where they faced four of the conference's top six teams in a span of ten days, will now shift their focus to honoring their seniors on Saturday and preying on the 5-19 Hawks of Holy Names next week.
ARGONAUTS FREE-FALLING TO FINISH
Early in the PacWest slate, the Notre Dame de Namur basketball team was right in the thick of the conference race, starting off 4-2. After winning two out of three in Hawaii, their losing streak has run to nine straight since then. Most recently, they had a pair of close losses to Dixie State (66-61) and Holy Names (63-61). Wesley White is still a double threat for the Argos, averaging 12.7 points per game and 6.9 boards, but he is the only NDNU player in the PacWest's top 20 in either category. The Knights are looking for revenge after a 76-68 loss to the Argos back on December 1, having done a lot of growing since then.
OH NO HE SHAMSUD-DIN'T
With his 3-pointer at the 12:57 mark in the first half of the game against Dominican, senior guard
Ameer Shamsud-din became the new Academy of Art career leader in scoring. With three games left to play, Shamsud-din's two years here are among the top five scoring seasons on record, putting up a program best 466 points last year. He leads the Knights in scoring average and 3-pointers made, and also has the second-most assists and third-most steals in an Urban Knights uniform.
A LONG JOURNEY EAST
After their home finale, the Knights will make the arduous journey over the Bay Bridge to face off against Holy Names in Oakland. The Knights blew out the Hawks in San Francisco back on December 8, but the Hawks managed to pull out a win against NDNU last week behind 15 points from both Ian collins and Tyler Fry. In the game against the Knights back in December,
Akil Johnson dominated the inside, going 9-of-10 from the field and scoring 18 points, while
Bryan Fisher had 13 points and tied a team record with 11 assists.
SCOREBOARD WATCHING
The Urban Knights still have a shot at making it into the inaugural PacWest Conference Tournament, but will need some help. Winning out will definitely help their chances, and the Knights will have a good chance against two teams below them in the standings with a grudge match against Dominican set to end the year. On the other hand, while they sit one loss behind Hawaii Pacific in the standings, HPU holds the tiebreaker. Again in the positive light, the Sea Warriors are playing Grand Canyon (3rd place), Dixie State (1st place), and Chaminade (2nd place) to end the year.
