Women's Golf Shoots to Third Place Finish

Hayward, CA -- The Urban Knights women's golf team was back in action this weekend, and after a solid first round had them in contention on Saturday, they finished with a stellar round on Sunday and placed third overall in the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, only four strokes off the winning score. Lyra Yoe finished fourth overall, while Crystal Superal also had a top-ten finish, tying for eighth overall after posting the best round of the day for Academy of Art.

The Knights first-round score of 324 was enough to be fifth place on Saturday. Yoe had a first round of 77, which tied her for fifth overall. Andrea Nieto's first round of 79 was also a top ten in the first round. ART U as a team was behind Cal State Monterey Bay and host Cal State East Bay, who tied for first with scores of 315, followed by George Fox University (317) and Western Washington (320).

The second round was even better for the Urban Knights, as they knocked two strokes off their first round score. Yoe moved up a spot, finishing with a 157, good enough to slot her fourth overall in the individual standings. Crystal Superal also cut four strokes off her first-round score, which vaulted her into the top ten as she finished with a 160. Nieto and Melissa Genao finished up tied for 22nd place out of the field of 60, while Mariana Pazos shot an identical 86 to her first round to finish 32nd overall.

Academy of Art went from fifth to third, leap-frogging George Fox and Western Washington. Host Cal State East Bay won the day despite losing 12 strokes to go with a score of 642. Cal State Monterey Bay finished two strokes behind them to take second place, while ART U was the highest of three PacWest competitors. Kelsey Morrison (George Fox) finished first overall, followed by Audra Kepler (CSUMB) in second, Andrea Castellanos (CSUEB) in third, with Yoe taking fourth and two players tying for fifth.
