El Cerrito, CA -- On the final day of the Pacific West Conference championship, the Academy of Art University women's golf team, who started the day tied for first, ended the tournament just off the lead and had to settle for second place. The Urban Knights had all of their players grouped near the top of the standings but eventually lost out to Grand Canyon University. ART U's
Deanna Tyndall finished third overall on the Knights home course, the Mira Vista Golf & Country Club.
The Urban Knights started the day as part of a tight cluster on top of the rankings, with only three strokes separating the top four teams. Academy of Art was tied with Grand Canyon to start the day, while Dixie State was a stroke behind and UH Hilo only a stroke behind the Red Storm. But while the Knights shot exactly the same score as the first (325), the Antelopes were able to get three strokes ahead, finishing out the inaugural tournament with a 322 and closing as the PacWest Champions. Following ART U in third was Dixie State (333), while Hilo shot 343 in the final round to take fourth. Point Loma Nazarene University took fifth place.
Tyndall, who began the day in second place, finished third overall after a tough round that saw all of the first day leaders take a step backward in terms of score, as the junior went from 75 to 85 to finish with a 160. However, she was joined closely by teammates
Lyra Yoe (162) in fifth place and
Crystal Superal (163), who tied for sixth, as both seniors for the Knights improved substantial amounts on the second day.
Melissa Genao finished tied for 14th place at 168, while
Andrea Nieto tied for 18th place with 171, securing all five Urban Knights in the top half of the PacWest individual standings.
Haley Dunn ended the tournament as the top golfer, and was named as the Co-Golfer of the Year with second-place finisher Charlotte Jaengkit. Tyndall took third, followed by Samantha Stockton of PLNU and four golfers who tied for sixth. The complete list of All-PacWest Honors is below. Grand Canyon head coach Joe Powers was named Coach of the Year after leading the Lopes to victory, while Brittney Bisgrove (Dixie State) was named PacWest Freshman of the Year.
ART U now awaits their fate when it comes to the NCAA Super Regional, which will take place next Monday in Grand Junction, CO.
