Litchfield Park, AZ - Tuesday was a day of improvement for the Academy of Art women's golf team, but they stayed where they started the day in 12th place at the Grand Canyon Women's Invitational.
Crystal Superal jumped up to finish tied for sixteenth place to lead the Knights as four of their five golfers improved on their first round score on the Wigwam Golf Course in Arizona.
Superal ended the tournament with 23 pars, tied for the third most in the field, and went up six spots in the standings as she knocked a stroke off her first round score.
Sierra Sanchez added one stroke, but
Andrea Nieto (four strokes),
Lyra Yoe (three strokes), and
Mariana Pazos (three strokes) all improved. Yoe also posted three birdies on the day. Eryn Olsen (Grand Canyon) took over the top spot and finished alone in first with a +4 on the tournament, followed by Western New Mexico's Arrianna Estrada (+5), Sonoma State's Spencer Heller (+8), and four players tied for fourth place.
On the team scores, the Knights shaved a total of seven strokes off their first round mark, giving them a total of 659 which placed them just out of the tenth spot, shared by Cal State Monterey Bay and Western New Mexico at the end of the day. Grand Canyon (619) took over the top spot, with the first round leader St. Edward's (628) falling to second. Northeastern State (638), Chico State (639), and Cal State East Bay rounded out the top five.
The Urban Knights will have one more tuneup at the Sonoma State Spring Invitational on April 8-9 before hosting the PacWest Championships on April 15-16.
