Knights End Season With Win Over Cougars

Box Score

Waipahu, HI --
Playing for pride as well as the opportunity to avenge one of the few regular season losses here in 2013, the Academy of Art University women's tennis team finished the year on a high note, defeating #24 Azusa Pacific in convincing fashion with a 5-0 sweep. For the Urban Knights, they'll end the season 20-7, and with the win completed their journey through the consolation bracket to lock up fifth place in the PacWest Conference.

The Knights were encouraged during doubles play, as their first doubles team of Nina Gajdosikova & Daniela Amelunge Antelo took out Emily Harris & Danae Ingwaldson 8-2. Amal Ben El Hadj & Michelle Dandik Zaale won 8-6 in second doubles, and Jenny Johansson teamed up with Lucia Zavarcikova won 8-3 to sweep doubles play and put the Knights within two wins of victory.

The last time these two teams matched up, the Knights were leading outside of doubles but fell when it came to singles play. That was not the case this time, however, as Ben El Hadj continued to be one of the quickest finishers on the team, downing Brejohn Mcrary in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Zavarcikova also won in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) over Kim Koetterheinrich to secure the win and even the score against the Cougars for the year.

Academy of Art now awaits the results of next week's regional poll and the national ITA poll that comes out on May 1st, which will determine their position when it comes to the NCAA Division II West Regionals on May 2-4 and the NCAA Division II National Championship on March 8-11.
