CHICO, Calif. — The Academy of Art University men's golf team's 2014 fall season swung into gear Monday and Tuesday at the InterWest Wildcat Classic hosted by Chico State and the Urban Knights started its autumn strong with a sixth-place team finish and three top-30 individual showings at Butte Creek Country Club.
 
ART U shot a 905 (+41) team score over the three round competition, finishing four strokes behind fifth-place Cal State East Bay. The Urban Knights were second among the five Pacific West Conference teams in the 15-team field. Dixie State (875) was runner-up to host and tournament champion Chico State (865). Dominican (Calif.) (7th, 906), Holy Names (12th, 930) and Notre Dame de Namur (13th, 950) all finished behind the Knights.
 
Freshman Gustavo Romero shined in his first collegiate competition, finishing tied for ninth individually. Romero opened the tournament with a 3-over 75 before closing with back-to-back even-par 72s. Romero had seven birdies in the second round to fight off two double-bogeys on his 17th and 18th holes, including three in a row on his third through fifth holes.
 
"I am pleased with our finish at Chico," said ART U head coach Andy Moren. "A lot of the credit goes to Gus who led our team and earned a top-10 as an individual."
 
Junior Dat Do finished tied for 23rd with a 227 (+11) and senior Alberto "Dago" Esponda was tied for 30th at 229 (+13). Freshman Oscar Frick (t-56th, 236) and senior Eugene Wang (t-74th, 248) also competed for the Urban Knights.
 
Academy of Art will next compete at the Sonoma State Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Foxtail Golf Course in Rohnert Park.
