Sveinsson, Urbanyi Garner All-PacWest Honors

2014 Men's Soccer All-PacWest Teams and Awards

IRVINE, Calif. — The 2014 Men's Soccer All-Pacific West Conference teams were announced Wednesday, and Academy of Art landed two players on the list. Junior midfielder Kristof Urbanyi was named to the Second Team and senior midfielder Thobbi Sveinsson was named Honorable Mention.

Urbanyi scored a flurry of goals in the season's final five games, tallying five goals and 11 points (5 goals, 1 assist), including two multi-goal games and three game-winning goals in that span. He led the team on the year with seven goals and 17 points, both top-three single-season marks in ART U history. His 0.50 goals per game and 1.21 points per game were both second-best in a single season.

"Kristof scored some key and amazing goals this year," said ART U head coach Mike Keller. "He even played three games slightly out of position doing this. His effort and presence will be really exciting to build around for next spring and fall."

Sveinsson had been with the Urban Knights since 2012, playing in 44 games across three seasons. He was an integral part of ART U's midfield during his time donning the red and black, and for his career had six goals and two assists. In 2014, Sveinsson had goals against Cal State Stanislaus – a 2-1 ART U victory – and on the road against California Baptist on Oct. 16.

"Thobbi's contributions in effort and team leadership can not be measured and this showed again this year," said Keller. "He'll be sorely missed."

PacWest champion Azusa Pacific led the way with seven All-PacWest members and two individual award winners. The teams and awards were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches.

Holy Names junior Jaime Phillips was named PacWest Player of the Year after leading the conference in goals (21) and points (44) for the second-consecutive season. APU junior Chris Brusenback was named PacWest Defender of the Year and Dave Blomquist was named PacWest Coach of the Year. BYU-Hawaii senior Chris Pineda was named PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year. California Baptist forward Aidan Apodaca was named PacWest Freshman of the Year, recording 15 points on seven goals and one assist. He led all PacWest freshman in goals and points.

Azusa Pacific had seven players earn All-PacWest honors, including Brusenback, sophomore Luke Ackermann and junior Carlos Garica-Partida on the first team. BYU-Hawaii, California Baptist and Notre Dame de Namur each garnered six; and Fresno Pacific and Hawai'i Pacific each had five.
