Knights Close Gap But Penguins Pull Away Late

Box Score

San Rafael, CA -- The Academy of Art University men's basketball team went into the Icebox at Dominican University and actually outshot the home team from the floor, but the Penguins made 12 of 24 shots from beyond the arc to push themselves over the top in a 83-69 loss. The Urban Knights got a pair of 20-point performances as Alex Carmon had his second straight double-double (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Alexis Moore added his 10th 20+ point game of the year with 20 points and six boards.

The game started off slowly for both sides, with the Urban Knights holding a 6-3 lead heading into the first media timeout. Out of the break, Myles Carrillo made a triple for the Penguins, and that started a trend that would carry Dominican for the rest of the way. ART U pushed the lead back to five on a trey from Moore, but another three-pointer from Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten off the bench tie it up at 13-13 with 11:04 to play.

After the Knights held a 17-16 lead, a three-pointer from Matt Hayes gave Dominican the advantage that they wouldn't give up for the rest of the way. They would extend the lead to eight with 4:48 to play, leading 27-19, before ART U closed to within a basket on a layup from Rodrigo Maza that made it 29-27 with just over two minutes left in the half. But the Penguins finished the period on a 7-1 run, and the score was 36-28 heading into the locker rooms.

Aaron Anderson split free throws to score the first points of the second half and make it a seven point game, but Dominican quickly moved the lead into double-digit territory on a three from Dominique Taplin with 17:30 on the clock. A few minutes of battling later, and the Knights used the free throw line to get back in the game, as Carmon, Matt Cesca, and Moore made buckets from the charity stripe to cut the lead to 55-49 with 9:07 to go.

But Dominican camped out beyond the arc and kept sinking them, as Schwartz-Edmisten sunk another of his four shots from downtown to make it 62-52 with 7:44 to play. The Knights continued to get to the rim, eventually outscoring the Penguins in the paint 32-26, but with Dominican shooting 24 threes in the game, the odds swung out of the Knights favor. Down the stretch, Aaron Aikman hammered home a dunk and Moore made another three-pointer, but Schwartz-Edmisten and Hayes made back-to-back threes with just over a minute to play to shake any thoughts of a comeback.

Moore and Carmon's 20 points each led the Knights, while Maza added 11 points and three rebounds. Aaron Anderson chipped in nine points, making 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. Schwartz-Edmisten had a game-high 21 points off the bench, while Myles Carrillo had 18 points and Taplin had 16 for the Penguins.

Academy of Art will play their final game of the season on Thursday, hosting Azusa Pacific at 5:30 PM. Their two seniors, Maza and Aikman, will be honored in a pregame ceremony.Â
