Round 2 Final
Riverside, CA -- Finishing the CBU Women's Invitational strong, the Academy of Art University women's golf team jumped into sole possession of second place after shooting the second-best round of the day.
Crystal Wang finished tied for fourth, while
Roxanne Matta tied for sixth, both maintaining the positions they started the day in, while the Knights shot the second-best round of the day to move ahead of the competition and end up right behind host California Baptist University.
"I am so proud of how the Knights played," said head coach
Elaine Harris. "It feels good to walk away with our first trophy of the season."
The Knights, just like a majority of their competition, actually shot a little behind their pace set on Monday, but still were able to limit their score difference to only four strokes, finishing with a team score of 319 in the second round and 634 overall. The Lancers were ahead of the pack, claiming the top two individuals on their home course while shooting 318 in the second round to finish at 621. West Texas A&M (642), Midwestern State (645), and Point Loma Nazarene University (649) rounded out the top five teams.
Wang and Matta each started the day in the same places they finished, as they both shot identical rounds of 79 (+6) on the day. Wang tied for fourth place while Matta tied for sixth, and
Deanna Tyndall would tie for 11th place in the standings.
Mariana Pazos cut five strokes off her first round score to finish tied for 28th, while
Sierra Sanchez finished tied for 48th in a big field.
"Crystal is such a solid and constant player and I am very proud of the way she held herself today," said Harris. "In tournament competition she is consistently is putting herself to a position to win tournaments. I am also really proud of the rounds Roxanne put together this tournament. This is her second tournament of shooting in the 70s both rounds. She is playing smart and not throwing away strokes."
CBU's Tina Yang (148, +2) and Marvi Monsalve (151, +5) finished first and second, respectively, followed by Glory Janthongsiri (WTAM) in third. Wang was tied with Kari Gordon of the University of Redlands, who did not finish after one golfer withdrew and another was disqualified.
The Knights hit the links again this weekend at the Pioneer Shootout, hosted by Cal State East Bay.
